Just read an article on Facebook about Chris Burandt getting charged for running illegal guiding services in US National Forests in Colorado since 2010. Apparently he has been warned twice and still got caught. Fined $1000 plus $5000 and 10 days community service as well as a ban. Sorry don't know how to post link but a guy shared it to Snow and Mud facebook page.

I'm in no way defending what he did, if it's actually true. But...

I am so sick of all these bogus ****ing permits for everything, and trying to make criminals out of normal people. Especially south of the border. It just seems like such a colossal waste of valuable resources, that could be used to enforce laws against actual criminals.

Sign a waver if need be, and giver hell. People need to start taking responsibility for there own actions.

In BC, the tenure process is extensive and over blown for dispersed guiding operations. HOWEVER, having personally gone through this process, it doesn't work when you have a system that applies to some and not to others. The BC government needs to ensure that all operators start on a level playing field to reduce competitive discrepancies.

Perhaps.......but as the most known professional in our sport (arguably) will there be continued support? With the amount of pressure to play by the rules would it be ethical to support his illegal operation? Maybe profit margins will be cut. And if they're not then as a community we're no better.

I know there has been some snow issues in Colorado in recent years. I sure haven't been impressed with snow down there on the times I have rode there especially when you gauge it to the snow we see in Revy and Sicamous up here. My buddies ride with him a lot and they had to meet him at an untenured area once because of snow and he told them he would meet them there and they would just kind of hook up together so it didn't look like it was a paid guide for the day.

This is unfortunate news, and a bit of a black eye to the snowmobiling community (cause we always need more bad press). As he is a high profile rider and spokeperson for the community, it doesn't say much for our group when the rules are dismissed. Hopefully a lesson has been learned...

Id like to hear his side of the story. I bet the govt is being completely unreasonable so he figured screw it. Not acceptable either way but riding snowmobiles in a national park here in Canada is like a 100,000$ fine so this little fine he received is strange

I would like to hear his side as well. If anyone has any connections with him, I would like to see him post his own comments here.

I know Chris a little bit and know that he doesn't post on forums. He's a busy guy and has a hard time fitting in all the clients he has, as the price he charges reflects. So spending his time following forums isn't a priority. I know this is a sore subject for him and that he's moved his operation twice to get bigger tenures. The problem started at the onset of his business when he tried to get around the tenure issue by saying he was giving and being paid for riding lessons not guiding as he was unable to get tenure in the area he was riding. I'm not familiar with their tenure system, but it sounds similar to ours in that it can be almost impossible to obtain and that for some areas it won't be granted. The last couple of years he's cleaned up his act considerably as he knows he won't be given any leeway.
