Thinking of building my own turbo setup for 2007 apex. Im not sure if I should start tearing into it or not. I dont have the funds for a 5000.00+ build, and i love building stuff. How many people have built thier own and wish they bought the kit?

Built a few turbo kits over the years but never for a sled. Just take your time and use quality components. I would probably use a garrett ball bearing setup, air/water intercooler, and a boost it fuel setup.

If I had access to good fabrication tools and lots of pipe and stuff like that I would build my own. Who knows, you could find something to patent when you're building your own setup. I don't think it would be too hard if you understand how a turbo functions and have the skills necessary to build your own piping and integrate different parts. I think turbo kits are outrageously priced as it is. Talk to "NM" here on s&m and get him to set ya up with his boost it kit tho, I am sure he could shed some insight on a project like this too. Good luck!

I think I will tackle it. I am not sure of two things, the return oil pump for a rear mount turbo and is the intercooler a necessity or not. (7 lbs boost)

Had a buddy build his own kit for a Nytro. Rear mount. low boost, no headshim, intercooler with boost-it fuel system. When all was said and done it was just as expensive (if not more) than a MCX low boost kit. That being said, it was intercooled and he could run at 10 lbs without any issues. Once he got the kinks worked out it worked pretty good. His biggest problem was all the money he had to spend to redesign and refab stuff when it didn't fit quite right. The fit and finish of the pre-built kits you don't have to worry about that.

You can probably buy a complete pimped out Apex with a 310 MCX kits already installed for alot less than $10k now, so that might be the most cost effective option.

Add the components together, figure out your time, cost of shipping individual components, tech support for people who have no business installing stuff on there sleds, and you will quickly discover that turbo suppliers margins are pretty tight. If you are on a budget, there is way better deals on sleds that are built.

If you think your going to save money better have a machine shop and tig welder and dont keep track of your time. I got my first kit in a box and they had no more of a clue than i did AT that time lots of r$d and trips to the welding shop. If you dont want to spend that kind of money leave the turbo scene alone it is not cheap i am talking 2 stroke.

If you're looking at it as a fun project and learning experience then go for it. If you're trying to save money don't waste your time.

I wrench less on my turbo apex than I did on my 2 strokes. Still have maintenance to do but pretty much most is preventitive as in bearings and chain. If you do it right the first time round you will enjoy for alot of miles.

I have to agree if you are building it to save money you will spend more in the long run. You can buy a well built apex for around 10k or less.

the words "Budget" and "Turbo" DO NOT belong in the same sentence!!!!!! but i do think you would be time and money ahead to go buy a good kit from someone who has put in the time on r&d and already has most of the bugs worked out, and are willing to help you if and when you have problems with it. service is a key selling point!

For the rear mount pump add the MC Xpress mechanical oil pump that mounts behind your oil tank. Dean at Alpine has his own pumps as well. You can also buy them from NM at Boost it. Stay away from the electrical pump.

I Can sell you my intercooler and fuel regulator setup. This is ready for the boost it injector setup which works very well. The Intercooler has the blow off valve on the bottom and was for the Powderlites stage 3 turbo. The intercooler is good, Im just upgrading to the air to water cooler. The regulator is a Aeromotive one.

Your really not going to save much money in the end, whats your apex motor worth if you blow it up while tuning lol, I realize its a 4 stroke and they can take lots of abuse from bad tuning. If your wanting to build an one off kit with different turbos, fuel systems and intercoolers then what is offered I can respect that, or you just want that satisfaction of building it your self thats awesome. Just dont do it for the dollar value. Your better off to go to work a few more days and ride a sled that actually runs properly when you have time to ride it. Just my mouthful for the night, thanks for listening
