I cant afford synthetic oil for my 98 summit 670 at 65$ a damn jug. But my dad wants me to buy it for my sled, but I want to buy Castrol or Shell because its affordable at half the price. And is approved by all snowmobile manufactures. His girlfriend B****ed me out about bothering him and to just buy the synthetic oil and not bother with the other ones because if I buy any other brand ill blow my engine. OOOOOOOH! Scary!
Can I put mineral oil in, or do i HAVE to use synthetic oil?
Any input is appreciated.

I think it is always best to run the manufacturers oil. That said I run Yamalube in my Cat.

Nothing wrong with castrol. Run it for 9years in my 01 summit 700 and the 670 before that. Tried shell synthetic once and seized, never used shell 2 stroke oil again.

I was just doing some research and it turns out that BRP oil is essentially Castrol. Castrol produces it, its just under the BRP brand so I guess im not doing any harm.

BUT that being said, I was just gonna ride til my oil light comes on then fill the tank up with the new type of oil, is this a good idea or should I just mix it in seeing how it is castrol, the main difference being that im switching from synthetic to mineral.

Tell your dads girlfriend to relax! JK, but seriously i ran castrol on my 08 xp and never had any problems.

Shes a high matinence queen that had everything handed to her her whole life. Im 16 and I pay for everything that has to do with my sled. Insurance, gas, oil, and repairs. I dropped 200$ on new skis when I got the sled.
My dad bought me the sled, I didnt ask him too. He was supposed to take me to pick it up and he told me to put my money away and hed cover it.
But that came with a catch, he threatens to take back the sled when I give him lip and his girlfriend tells me im ungrateful for what my dad has done for me.

The way I see it, the OEM's have much more to loose if they don't do their job right than a general oil supplier. Correct additives that are specific to the needs of their engine components, ongoing quality control, and remember, when it blows up what do we say: the Castrol or Wal-Mart or "other" oil failed; NOT; we say the damned Cat or Polaris, or Ski-Doo or Yammy engine crapped out on us.
I ride too many miles every year to take the chance.
Synthetic Blend XPS oil is about $50/jug, and is very good insurance.
That way Dad doesn't have to bail me out of my $3 or 4,000 repair bill.
Never mind what his girlfriend might have to say about it.

I use the Amsoil synthetic Interceptor in my XP....Its $38 a jug and as good as anything. But, I have a buddy who runs the castrol walmart oil in his 07-800R and he swears by it.... As long as its getting oil, no problems, you just might have more rave valve maintenance with mineral oil....

3 to 4 grand on a brand new sled maybe. Not a 98 summit. Like I said castrol supplies BRP so the specification are more or less the same. And BRP and all other manufactures approve using castrol oil. Im paying 30$ a jug less than BRP oil. IM not dropping synthetic completely just switching to a lesser costing one.

Never had a problem with the regular mineral oil that was recommended for my 98 or my 04. Both had over 5000kms with no issues. That being said if it has been running on synthetic the run synthetic. Which one is your choice.

then the simple solution is to pay your dad back, tell him you consider it a loan. you will grow some big cohonne's in your dads eyes. the sled will be yours to do as you wish. and his girl friend may shut up. it is hard for your dad to let go, and the sled is one way he can get you to listen. as for oil, he is not steering you wrong, put the best oil you can afford in the sled.

But can I just put it in or do I have to drain and add or can I just wait for the oil light to come on and put it in then?

The problem the oil that he runs, because hes rich enough to run it, is the top of the line 65$ a jug oil. My parents are divorced, I live with my mom, and we arent exatly living higher up on the scale. So this sled was sort of buying my love since we dont see eye to eye on everything. As said I pay for everything on a part time minimum wage job. So the castrol is all I can afford.
