The 2016 Ski-Doo MX Z Iron Dog Special has a 128-inch track and will be in very limited supply.
Ski-Doo unveiled today the 2016 Ski-Doo MX Z Iron Dog Special, a sled designed especially for the 2,000-mile Iron Dog cross-country race in Alaska.
The 2016 Ski-Doo MX Z Iron Dog Special was designed for aggressive, rough-trail riders and has many characteristics used on past Iron Dog race-winning machines, along with a distinctive color and graphics scheme.
It starts as a MX Z X-RS, but the primary difference between the 2016 Ski-Doo MX Z Iron Dog Special and the 2015 MX Z X-RS is the Iron Dog Special’s 128-inch track. Ski-Doo has used a 128-inch track and longer suspension on its 2014 and 2015 MX Zx 600 RS race sleds, but this is the first time the configuration has been available to consumers. The extra 8 inches increases traction for acceleration and braking, yet maintains the MX Z sled’s sharp cornering abilities, Ski-Doo says. Its RAS 2 front suspension debuted on many 2015 Ski-Doo models.
The 2016 Ski-Doo MX Z Iron Dog Special has a 2-ply RipSaw track and is available with either the Rotax 800R E-TEC (479 pounds) or 600 H.O. E-TEC (469 pounds) engine. It includes race-specific chassis reinforcements and KYB Pro 40 shocks tuned with “even more capability in big bumps” than other X-RS models, a release from Ski-Doo said. Suspension springs are stiffer and the front track shock utilizes and dual-rate coil-over spring.
“It’s great to see a manufacturer build a special sled like this one and name it after our race,” said Kevin Kastner, Iron Dog race executive director. “We’re enthusiastic to be associated with Ski-Doo snowmobiles and appreciate the support they put into their racers that make the Iron Dog such a remarkable event.” The starts February 21 in Anchorage and ends on February 28 in Fairbanks.
“The Iron Dog race has a long storied history, and BRP’s Ski-Doo sleds have been at the forefront in recent years winning two out of the last three events,” said Louis Lévesque, vice-president, Global Marketing and Consumer Experience. “Many riders have chosen to race Ski‑Doo snowmobiles in the Iron Dog the past several years because they’re known for being durable, fast and easy on the rider – and those are certainly attributes we’ve built into the MX Z Iron Dog Special snowmobile and our other sleds.”
Sébastien Thibault, race manager for Ski-Doo Snowmobiles added, “More than anyone else, we use racing to make our snowmobiles better. That’s especially true of cross-country races like the Iron Dog because it’s an extreme version of how many snowmobilers ride every weekend. Consumers who ride their own Iron Dog Special model with their buddies will love what this unique sled delivers,” Thibault said.
The 2016 Ski-Doo MX Z Iron Dog Special will be available starting January 15 at select dealers across North America. Production is limited and it will only be available this winter. U.S. retail pricing is $13,999 for the 800 or $12,799 for the 600.
It closely resembles a MX Z X-RS, but the 2016 Ski-Doo MX Z Iron Dog Special has firmer suspension calibrations and a longer track.
