Boosting a quad

Can you 'boost' a quad with a dead battery with jumper cables using the battery from a car or even off of another running atv?

Figured i would ask this ahead of time as im trying to make sure i have all the supplies i need (whether i need to buy a portable power pack, or just bring jumper cables)

Yes. Since most newer larger bore quads don't have pull starts any more, a small set of cables is a good idea.

And if they had a pull start you wouldn't be able to pull on the rope without ripping your arm off anyway , lol.
I made a small set of jumper cables and kept them with the quad.

Costco sells a small portable booster that comes in a small carry case with multiple different charge cords as well as a set of cables to hook up to a battery. I got one for the SxS. Used it on the boys quad several times without recharging. Less than $100. Pretty handy and eliminates the need for a second machine for boosting.

Those tiny little booster packs work great too. They will boost a quad many times on a charge, smaller than packing cables, and you don’t need a friend.

yup got one of those new fangled booster packs, size of a pocket book, boosted the diesel 3 times on the same day on the single charge, and had lots left for another boost if needed, also have a pile of adapters to charge phones, run puters, and anything battery operated, have had it going on second year now?

i recommend there purchace, costco had a good price last month, now? there are different amp ratings, buy as high rating as you can although = mo money!.

i would also like to see someone pull start a large atv by hand. lol.

I made my quad cables out of heavy subwoofer speaker cable I had laying around. Had em for years now. Was a day saver after buddy layed his KTM down in the Kakwa River while crossing...

The small booster pack will boost a vehicle easily.

Find one that has adapters for charging phones etc.

I've seen these small booster packs in operation and they are pretty impressive. That said, everything in my quad box eventually gets totally trashed. So, between damaging them in the quad box and the need to always remember to check the charge before going out, isn't a set of cables just an easier, more reliable way to go?

nothing wrong with cables, as long as you have something to boost from.

i have melted the ends on truck booster cables is the reason i ask. if you doo try them, maybe only for short bursts.

i was wondering the same? no idea what amperage the quad electric start would take. and would it do damage to the boosting vehicle? no idea just asking.

BigMikey make sure you put tire plugs,small air compressor,can of liquid start,tow rope,on your list if your in back country

^+1, I also carry a small boat anchor if I'm out alone in case there are no trees within 150 feet of where I'm stuck, saved my ass more than once. And don't forget your chain saw, especially in the spring.

Something else to consider. Some atvs can be pull started, like my grizzly 700. Turn the key on, high range, and it will start at around 15km/h.
