Have a HP Pavillion running Vista that has been freezing-up, then displaying the 'blue screen'. after hard start it works great while I'm using it but it seems that when it sits idle it does it's little trick again. tried system restore (but could only go back to Dec 7th). Has been doing this for 1-2wks. Any ideas/feedback .
thanks in advance

Download and run Microsoft Security Essentials and see if it picks anything up. Upgrade to Windows 7 and get rid of Vista. It's very unstable.

check your tower for dust, our desktop was doing that and a techie friend suggested it. opened it up and the dust was thick in there, vacuumed and cleaned it out, but still ended up having to replace the fan. once I changed that it was fine and didn't do it again. your mileage may vary

blue screen of death normally relates to a memory error, either in the processor or the ram. Or hardware failure, step 1, download something like security essentials or Ad-aware, run the indepth scan, step 2, defragment your hard drive, step 3, clean up the hard drive, too much stuff on the hard drive and lack of storage can also cause these errors.

I have a HP Pavilion DV8. Nice display, lots of memory. But I have had a lot of problems, including the blue screen. Crashed a couple times wiping everything off the drive. The volume and wifi switch would cycle at random, so finally I said screw it and got a MacBook Pro. Best thing I ever did, just wonder why I put it off so long.

I would take it to a computer store and get them to clone the HD to a new one. your disk is damaged once it goes down its really expensive to get your stuff.

The causes are many.
Odd tho your computer works fine till it sits idle for abit like you say.
Sits idle for abit if configured as so puts your computer into Sleep Mode.

Fix 1 of 1000.

Not being familiar with Vista your mostly on your own.

In Control Panel clic on the System and Maintenance link
Then click on the Power Options / Change The Way the System Sleeps
Then put a check beside High Performance and click the Change Plan Settings link then Disable Automatic Sleep Mode.

Perhaps your computer is choking entering the Sleep mode stage and re-awaking to death sort of speak.

Ok I own a computer service company so you know up front I am a fully trained MSCE and A+ trained tech.

To help you can you give me the code that displays on the screen when you get the BSOD. It will look like: 0X00000001 (0X00000A2, 0x00024349....... and so on. This actually means something (Most of the time) and from that I can help solve your problem.

And Microsoft Security Essentials is about as good as using dog crap as dish soap. They should stick to the OS and office application world and leave anti-virus software to companies like Symantec.

Sounds like your machine is new, which would suggest that dirt and dust are not an issue. If you are running it and it works ok until you idle down and leave it, my guess is a possible loose connection or what we old techs call "chip creep". As components in the machine heat up and cool down, they tend to move micromillimeters at a time. If the person who built your unit was not on the ball, they may have inadvertently made a connection that was loose to begin with. Open up the machine and check any cards (especially graphics card) that are installed to see that they are all connected properly. Check connections to hard drives, including power connections and make sure they are not loose. Check memory cards to ensure they are "seated" properly. Give it a good "once over" and see if you notice anything odd. With Vista, you can get the add-ons for free, there is one that looks like tach and speed guages. They tell you the speed of cpu, temp and such. Monitor to see if the cpu is heating up or not. Could be loos cpu fan or perhaps they didn't put any lithium grease between the cpu fan and the cpu proper. This inhibits the transfer of heat from the cpu to the fan and dissipation just doesn't happen correctly.

If you want to clean the machine nicely, crank on the air compressor with a pressure setting of less than 20 psi. Take your puter outside on the porch and blow the dust out of all the nooks and crannies, paying attention to fans and fan-fins, which get dirty in a hurry. I recommend once a year doing the porch thing on the puter just to keep it clean.

Mine is doing the same thing now. Seems to have started after I installed Internet Exploerer 9, just haven't had the time to remove it and try again.

Well, first of all...thank you to everyone for the feedback!!, it is greatly appreciated. I have cleaned the dust out and checked that all connections are intact with no impact (although it does look better). I had cleaned it about six months ago so it wasn't that dirty. FYI- I'm running the Windows Vista Home Premium program.
I'll throw out some additional info pieces that I have come across: 'service hang report', 'windows updated installation problem', 'update for windows vista'-multiple failed attempts, 'microsoft security essentials'-multiple failed attempts, and some references to the 'start' program. The blue screen numbers shown are; (0x0000000A, 0X00000001, 0X0000001B, 0X824F4B43) TCCK...I hope this means something to you because I get absolutely zero from it!!. And most recently (today), after yet another windows helpful 'diagnosing' of the problem it came back with "kaspersky anti-virus stopped working properly".
P.S- it might take one or two 're-starts' but then it works fine and has never frozen while i'm active on it!?

So that is where I am at currently and my next step is to take it in for repairs...or destruction!!. once again, thanks to all for the help.

I would rather see every user have a functional up to date AV than some outdated piece of worthless bloatware. Symantec and their ilk are the digital equivalent of mafia with their "protection fees".
