So then if a rancher has a cow in hard labour and has to put the old shoulder gloves on at 3 in the morning, after he's worked all day feeding, etc. Will he be in violation of the labor practices? What if he takes his kid with him to show them how to pull a calf? Will he be in violation of the child labor laws as well? The farm has no set hours or shifts. What about harvest time, when you have a small window to get everything down and in are they just supposed to shut'er down for the night when they run out of hours?

The colony thing may help the family farms plight. If colonies do not apply because there is no employment contract than the same logic should apply to the family farm.... It just makes sense that that's how it should be. EMPLOYEES should be protected by both OHS & WCB but coverage is not required for owners/partners, it can be purchased optionally but not required.

right..... Right , of course that makes sense!!

I would argue they are partners with a stake in the business not employees. My kids mow the lawn, rake leaves, do dishes, etc.etc.etc....I do not consider them employees neither does the law. If I pay a roofer to replace my shingles and a mason to re-brick my chimney, In the absence of a prime contractor agreement with either contractor by default I become the prime and responsible for employee safety.

If you do not define your family as "employees" than no legislation other than the criminal code should apply, not labour code, OHS act/regulation/code nor WCB legislation....

Again I do not believe that OHS & WCB Legislation should apply to a family farm UNLESS you employ outside labor (paid position claimed with an annual T4)

Just my opinion

I My point exactly... They are the biggest agricultural entity in Alberta . They are simply skirting the rules...I have sold cattle to colony's for over 30 years .... Trust me the ' regular guys ' are workers , not partners...!
ask one who left the colony what his partners cashed him out for ....? Lol
ohs and the rest of the union BS should be optional for each farm based on their own situation. IMO
if a prospective employe does not like it .... Go work for a farm that has it or Canadian tire .....

A man owned a small ranch near Great Falls, Montana. The Montana Labor Department got a tip that he was not paying proper wages to his help and sent an investigator out to interview him.

"I need a list of your employees and how much you pay them," demanded the investigator.

"Well," replied the rancher, "there's my ranch hand who's been with me for 3 years. I pay him $1200 a week plus free room and board."

"The cook has been here for 18 months, and I pay her $1000 per week plus free room and board."

"Then there's the half-wit. He works about 18 hours every day, with no days off, and does about 90% of all the work around here. He makes about $10 per week and pays his own room and board."

"But, I buy him a bottle of bourbon every Saturday night, and he also sleeps with my wife occasionally."

"That's the guy I want to talk to... the half-wit," says the investigator.

"You're talking to him," replied the rancher.

The NDP brought in the Forest Practice Code in BC. By the time they were done the where more people working in the forest than there where in the entire forest industry. It was run by snot nose brats like Trudeau with so many regulations it was ridiculous. Not one of them knew what the hell they where doing.

Or we are gonna be forced to become self proclaimed colonies.

Never tried to hide behind a religion but it seems like the in thing to do nowadays lol

I no longer activly farm, just rent out the 900 acres we own and gave up the leases. Just was not making sense to take time off work and still subsidise farming. I truly feel for those of you who continue to feed us, some of us though are to stupid to deserve food. This will burden you with added cost and responsibility to one of the few remaining honorable means of making a living for your family. I miss farming, hopefully not to many more throw in the towel.

I'd better explain what I was getting at but I gotta go build a fence across my lake access and pound tie off anchors into the road.....
And your yard has a slope to it which is dangerous when I'm over drinking building up the fire.

While we are at it overregulating people and interfering with their lives.......I had a few other ideas for legislation the NDP could put forth.

Water front living protection. Anyone living on property that contains a body of water with xxx amount of litres of water or more most comply with this new legislation. People just arent smart enough to be around water so we need a body of government regulators to take care of them. How many people have drowned in the last 10 years? Well 1 is too many. Lets get the government involved. Mandatory 6 foot fences around any water bodies. Life preservers mandatory if a person wants to be within a 100 foot radius of said water. I think a permit and safety meeting process could be implemented for if people actually wanted to go in the water. The more legislation the better. Lets help the government protect us from ourselves.

Been this way for years in the east.

I retired from farming as well. Couldn't afford to expand. My full-time job had an opportunity in the mountains. Ended up selling it all.

It's a shame to hear of farmers selling out. To bad people cant remember what just happened in the grocerie industry. All the small guys got driven out and now look where we are.

People should know that farming is going to turn eventually and when it does.... Well by that time, the only farms left will be owned by the rich.

yes it is a shame and eventually we will be run by a handful of multi nationals controlling us like a bunch of sheep. And it will get worse if the TPP agreement gets in place.
