Best used diesel?

On my 3rd Duramax. Last two I put on 650,000 Kim's of highway and oilfield roads. Minimal issues with the trucks and nothing with the motors or transmissions. Chipped the first one and nothing done to the second one. They definitely have enough power and yes the fuel mileage could be better when towing however I know it would be a lot worse in a gasser combine with no power either so I am fine with it. I find that diesel pricing up north is either even with gas or slightly less 98% of the time.

Yeah if a guy is doing any amount of pulling the ecoboost is definitely not the best choice....unless you have a company fuel card! They sure pull nice, but man do they drink the gas. But the way I look at it is, if a guy is just pulling the boat or camper out a couple times a year then you are better off eating the extra fuel cost. A diesel will be better but will still burn more fuel when pulling, higher cost up front, and higher cost of ownership.......so IMHO you need to be pulling quite a bit to recoup those costs and come out ahead.

This was going from Lacombe to Erskine. They were paving so speed limit was 80 so had the cruise at 90 km/h. This is my 2016 3500 duramax. Running some NASA blend of fuel conditioner that Catman10 sells. Don't really miss my ecodiesel at all! Averages 11.5L/100 when driving at 110 km/h. I would say most trucks are very similar for mileage, it's how you drive not what you drive.

Happy to hear the re-assurance. Have a Duramax LMM with 270,000 km on it & it's been fantastic so far. One of the best trucks I've ever owned and doing my best to leave the drive train 100% stock.

Every time I look at used vehicles, first on the ignore list is everything lifted and modified.

Seems like there are two types of owners; the ones that are blacked and lifted, with monster energy stickers abound OR grandpa's who are 80 years old driving them bone stock.

The other I saw a beauty 2007 2500 SLT Crew, the thing looked brand new. Dropped my card on his window. Has 50k on it. The guy is 83. That's what I'm looking for but probably have better luck finding a unicorn.

Has anyone here tuned a Ecoboost?

About 6 years ago I found a lease return. 3500 Dodge 6.7. Only thing I did was full delete. Very happy with it for towing.

Only put 15000 km on a year so all I need.

Have a 2011 gmc 3500 single rear wheel, def delete. Pulled my 15000# 5th wheel 5000km to dawson city and back through mountains and average 22l/100km

Im starting to kick myself for not buying my parents 2006 duramax. I think they took 8k or something on trade. It needed some work for sure, but for that kind of money you could put 7k into it and have one heck of a truck.

Are the trannys in the 6.7s garbage? My brother had major problems with his too. Is there anything aftermarket that is better?

I'm on my 3rd tranny on my '14 and I'm not hard on it. Built this one with full suncoast internals and TC. So far so good.

Hahaha . That's what I've been doing . There is a lot of mint Duramax trucks in my neighbourhood all owned by older retire folks . Hoping they are done with the RV thing

Not bad actually

Only thing with Dodge is trans are weak

I had a 2010 with a big power bump and the trans. was good for the 120k kms I had it and it was smooth. I think maybe it may be the much higher km units that fail??

Got the Asin now and it does feel clunkier as has a much heavier feel to it. Never liked the Allison when I had the 08 GMC. It was more about shift points and leaky tranny lines that pissed me off, did not fail though.

430,000km on my one 2006 duramax, only gripe is rattling brake pads. Fixed an oil cooler leak, and put in new transfer case.
200,181km on my old 2006 duramax, only gripe is a drunk driver totalled it off.
436,000km on my 2002 Duramax, gripes; injectors, NBSU, cab corner/rocker rust(previous owners fault).

One thing i did on my firSt duramax, was retrofitted an oil cooler for the power steering. As it's used for the hydroboost and it does burn often if you run large tires and tow in hot climate. After the cooler, I'm 2 years later, going to do my first oil change on it.

For every guy with a cooked trans on a Ram there is a Ford guy with a cooked turbo and a GM guy with a front end with so much play you cant drive it straight even if you were on rails.

Look at a guy like Rob with his truck, tows a bob cat and full load of gravel 12000lbs plus likely almost every day for 5-6 years and the tranny was fine. Start chipping and turning any of these trucks past stock levels and you will find a weak point. Its not the manufactures fault at that point.

I run my tuner on tow mode.
Has towing trans built now.

Very happy with my old Dodge 6.7

Dodges do have weak trans. I put one in mine. Get it rebuilt by a good trans shop and your good.
