Best used diesel?

Hey guys

Looking to sell my 14' Ecoboost Crew and get into a diesel. It just isn't an efficient towing vehicle and sucks empty too. Towing a 6000# trailer I'm getting around 30 L per 100.

Wouldn't mind going back to an older Chev, an LBZ if I can find one. Not particularly picky but has to be comfortable too. Would like it to last forever too.

Want to stay around 25k. Let me know your thoughts.

Good luck, used market is screwed right now. Unless you are okay with 250K or so on the clock expect to pay a bit more. Seems more Dodges on the market....

Yeah good luck. I bought my EB because I felt the market was crazy on used diesels and it's only gotten worse. If I were you I'd probably up my budget to $40k and look for a decent 6.7 F350, probably an 11 or 12 for that price.

Have you tried using premium gas in your Eco? Warm weather it makes a difference in mine up to 7L/100 km. Also take into consideration cost of diesel vs gas at the pump. Yesterday where I was it was 15c lower for gas

Gear ratio also makes a big difference on EB.
Premium fuel also like Bnorth said.
Have a 2016 and no complaints at all. 3:52 ratio.
Also have a 2012 Duramax that sits in the shop. Lol

Not known as the best one out there, but never left me stranded.
05 Harley Davidson Edition F350, getting close to 160,000 org Kms. I'm the 2nd owner, I bought it in 07 from my old boss in Edm, who bought it new. Color match canopy, never been chipped, 100% stock.
I'm looking to get out of it, because I don't use it for what it's made for anymore.

Here's my thoughts:

Ford; don't touch anything older than 2011, 6.0's had injector/egr issues, 6.4's had waterpump (which leaks into the oil pan when the seal goes), turbo, valvetrain, fuelpump, issues. 6.7's seems to be really good, some 11-14's have had turbo issues but not overly common.

GM; Not much bad to say here, LB7's had injector issues (01-04.5) LLY (04.5-06) had wiring harness issues for the injector, and 06 newer seemed to be pretty decent.

Dodge; I don't have much experience with the older ones, but every 6.7 our company owns has either had egr, headgasket, DEF pump, dpf plugging issues or a combination of the above.


But honestly I think you are going to have a hard time finding a good used diesel for 25k, I personally wouldn't part ways with my 14' powerstroke for much less than 50k, it's treated me far to well over the last 98,000km to sell for any less.

I bought a 07.5 duramax full load with navigation , old guy owned it and was anal, u can tell buy looking inside and out how it was kept

Has 282000 km, I'm not scared of km if it's been looked after, sometimes more km is better than not enough ( drys up seals e.c.t)

Paid less than half of what I should have ( work at dealer and bought it at cost, which is what the reserve would have been)

Runs great, did some normal stuff to it at the start, all stock engine with dpf still ( which I never thought I.d say it, I'm liking cause no smoke or smell) gets good mileage ( about 14l per 100 average), pretty much only pulls trailers and stuff so that's good

No way diesel was 15 cents more than premium!

You stole that thing. If I could get a truck like that for that money I'd take 3!

A 5l/100km savings over 20,000km is $1000, hardly worth justification for a bigger truck. Can't beat the power though... good luck

I bought a 2012 Cummins and that comes wrapped in a Dodge. It is a preference from years ago working with large diesels in construction.

Works very well and is currently stock (pre DPF). Fuel economy ranges from about 12.5 to 15 LPHK empty and 22 to 25 towing.

The torque is fantastic when pulling my fiver and could not imagine going back. Not a short commuter though IMO.

There have been a number of DMax engines over the years and their reputation is, I think, more good than bad.

The 2012 and newer Ford's seem pretty good too but I can't see you getting much of a used diesel in any of them for $25 K. I picked up my Dodge in 15 so it was 3 years old and it is a base model and still had to pay $37,500 but it did have lower KMs.

Good luck though. That deal may be out there.

i have a 07 dmax with 380000 k on it,never have had to do anything besides regular maintence,been a great truck,for myself would always stay with the gm. my company i work for have gm,ford and dodge,the gm has been the best for repairs so far,the gm is a 06 with over 400000 k on it,which for almost all those miles pulled 18000 pounds,the ford has approx 200000 k and has the most repairs,but was the 6.0l.the dodge is the newest which is only 3 years old with 150000k on it,took 120000 k to work out the bugs out of it.the gm and dodge when pulling the trailer the fuel economy is pretty close,gm pulls better of the line ,engine breaking about the same.

I'm biased towards GM because I've had such good luck with them. I owned two LBZ Duramax's, would still be driving the one if it never got totalled off from a drunk driver. I never did a single thing major on them. Biggest thing was a transfer case because a chain let go. Just do regular maintence, I do have one gripe. The front brakes rattle no matter what I do the ears on the pads wear out and they rattle over a bump

I just bought an LB7 duramax truck cheap and had to throw a new injector in it because I couldn't find s solenoid. But I'll see how it work s out. I would definitly recommend a Duramax.

The ride will speak for itself in comparison to a dodge.

I just wish it had a solid front axle set up like a Ford. That's something Ford has done right.

Unfortunately I've been through many of the trucks your after for work, just my $.02 on all of em:

#1) lbz duramax or even an LMM, in stock form or not will be a great vehicle, stay away from anything lifted cuz chances are it was bagged hard, just watch what tune guys are running too cuz anything over a 100horse and head gaskets will eventually be an issue.

#2) late 5.9 (06 ish) or 6.7 pre urea cummins: if bone stock they will never die but then mileage isn't great they're gutless. if deleted properly your biggest issue would be a water pump, maybe a trans if hi K, if deleted improperly, run away.

#3) Used Fords are less money for a reason.

But as others have said, with your budget it may be tough to find anything in great shape.

Head gaskets on the newer trucks are an issue because of the engine braking. I am a dodge guy but like said the trans is a weak spot. A 6.0 Ford I would recommend to my worst enemy! Most guys have good luck with gm but I couldn't eat enough crow to buy one!

Happy to hear the re-assurance. Have a Duramax LMM with 270,000 km on it & it's been fantastic so far. One of the best trucks I've ever owned and doing my best to leave the drive train 100% stock.

Every time I look at used vehicles, first on the ignore list is everything lifted and modified.

380000k on my 07.5 lmm. Just got back from sandpoint and averaged 19L per 100k pulling my 7000# bumper pull. Great truck. Only issues have been the tcase, and tranny cooler lines blowing. Gonna drive it till it dies and im sure it still has a ton of life. Its used as my everyday driver in the city and toy hauler. And it's been tuned with efi live for 250000 of that!
