Best Starter bikes?

My middle boy got a taste of a dirt bike (His life long dream I think...) at a friends house a few weekends ago. We've been on the fence with it, but I think have since caved on this.

He's turning 6, his brother is a rather large 8. Neither have ridden bikes before. Does a guy skip the 50's and try out a 65 right off the bat?

Where we are located, I can let them run free, but we are only on a few acres. I'll eventually have to let them run up and down the grid. In saying that, we'll need a second bike for me or mom (but not likely) to ride. Any suggestions on where to start with that?

You can't go wrong with the Yamaha PW50 , any year as they basically remained unchanged .
However this may be small for your big brute 8 year old.

Nice to learn gas and brake without a clutch for beginners, then progress to the manual clutched bikes.

They are too big for a pw50!

Pw 80 maybe. Or

4 stroke 110 for the bigger guy. Crf, Ttr, Klx.

4 gear automatic clutch. Pretty tame for learning.

2 stroke 65 has a lot of pep for a rookie.


Depending on the 6 year olds size he might be able to touch on a 110. But probably better to build confidence being able to touch flat footed.

Crf 50, ttr 50, or the Suzuki 70.

^^^ Like Tchetek said you can't go wrong with the 110 4 strokes you can get many years out of them running wise and riding wise. My daughter started riding a TTR110 at 7 she is now 9 and I just put handlebar risers on it, she will probably get 2 more years on it.

6 year old on a crf50 and the 8 year old on a 110. We bought the klx for our 8 year old and he’s on the small side. But klx ttr crf are all comparable

dont start em on anything there feet cant touch the ground on..my boys started on PW50 Trikes.. then 80s.125s. they never owned dirt bikes till on there own.

Get a KTM50 SX for the 6 year old. Lots of zip and good suspension. Suspension is always the downside to the little 4 strokes especially with small wheels. Stay away from the 4 stroke 50’s. Great bikes but kids outgrow so fast and then override them. I’ve seen some bad tumbles on those bikes.

Also if you are looking into a used 2 stroke race bike, try and buy one from a motocross racing family. MX bikes are probably the most looked after bikes out there. After every ride our bikes come home and get thoroughly cleaned and gone over completely. You can’t afford to lose a race or get a DNF because of poor maintenance.
