Seems that most of my favourites have all gone to really tough casings over the last year or so. What gives with that? Looking for recommendations on what you guys and gals find are the "best ever" smokies.

TKO's Elk are amazing, but I need something retail.

I prefer the Grimm's all Beef smokies. They are not too fatty nor too salty and they cook up well whether in the HotPot, on a stick, or the bar-b-que!

Most have too much fat and I'm not a big fan of cheese in the smokie. I like to put my own cheese slices on then I know what I'm getting (sort of?).

Hope you find a good one.....

Might want to try a local butcher and get some sausages. I usually cook the sausages the night or a couple nights before and then warm them up on the fire (don't have a muffpot, adds too much weight :D) when sledding. Usually a local butcher will have some real tasty sausage blends and probably won't use the thick casings. We make our own sausages but the odd time I will get some at Co-Op and they have some pretty good fresh ones in the meat counter.

We tried Bison smokies on the BBQ this past weekend and would recommend them highly, they are expensive at $8 for 4 smokies. Picked them up at the Farmers Market at the bus barns here in Edmonton.

I agree that the Harvest products are pretty good, especially the farmers suasage. We do buy some smokies/sausage from the vendors at the Strathcona Farmers Market on occassion.

There was a farmer selling organic meats at the local hall here on weekends last year and his stuff was great, but have not seen them this year.

Looks like I'm on a quest to find the perfect smokie. Been on quests for the best clam chowder, best tiramisu, and a few others.

Have to keep my eyes open for local butchers and see what they got.
