Currently using Navionics Ski app or Polaris Ride command which are just OK. Anyone have any better that show better TOPO?

Or is it worth buying a separate handheld unit?

I use a separate Garmin hand held, I just set it to home which is generally parking lot or unload area, and then make waypoint junctions throughout ride. Lithium battery will last all day, usually change once a year.

I use Gaia pro you can download maps to the phone so you can use them out of cell service and look at your track on your desktop. You can trim your track on your phone.

How do you keep the phone from dying or shutting off due to the cold.
I wanted to try the Polaris app but no luck.

The struggle is real.

I find the glove box usually gets enough engine heat that the batteries don't freeze.

The Garmin GPS Map has a good enough antenna that it doesn't skip a beat on tracking.

And the cell phone I only pull out when we are exploring and need to see Sat images.

Handlebar bag I have had electronics shut down due to low temp.

I try to keep them on the machine and off of me to prevent beacon interference.

For the iPhone, MotionX is a great app. I use it for
all my tracking. You can run in airplane mode and your battery will last all day.

You can put a 12V plug in into the skidoo glove box and just keep phone plugged in. GPS mapping does take a lot of power

Maps 3D pro is by far the best app. Installed the 12v outlet in the glovebox and have been running this since 2013.

Skitracks is another good one, works well, overlays on google earth on your computer, saves all tracks, shows elevation, angles, verticle feet, save pictures as way points, can email/text tracks to your buddies, has a fairly decent topo map. its the one our group uses, works in airplane mode as long as the phone is not frozen.

I also use skitracks and it works awesome. Even used it once to get out of pickle when the ceiling dropped into a whiteout coming out of the private meadows behind the bullpen at Boulder.

Thanks a bunch this is what I needed. The Maps 3d is perfect as I can now see better TOPO maps. I can see a Rhino in my future.

I like that you can rotate around the mountain and see the profile of the areas you are ridding. Or if you want to know if it's worth making that next climb you can see what your getting yourself into.

You can also take a picture when you drop a pin point and have them linked together.

I have the $35 Doo 12v plug and a usb charger inside the golvebox of my t3. Put phone in a glove or touque, keeps it out of my pocket and away from my beacon.

You guys have your phones turned on while sledding???

When you get home tonight turn your beacon on... or even better turn it on to search and run your cell phone under it and watch what happens!
