According to beaconreviews.com the Barryvox Pulse, Ortovox S1, and Pieps DSP are still rated the top 3 (All have 5 Star ratings). I personally have the Pieps DSP, and it has worked great in all practice exercises I have done (no actual searches thank god).

Agreed. I also have the DSP.

Funny how these are rated the best beacons but I see VERY few people with them. In fact I think I have only seen one other person with the DSP and one with the Barryvox.

Is your buddy's lives really worth the 100-150$ savings? Not to mention depreciation on one of these would be much better then the cheap alternatives that don't work great, and require much more user knowledge to use.

I'm not saying buying "the best" beacon will gauarentee safety, but I'm saying it can't hurt.

Well you know it is really hard to tell someone what the best beacon is, seeing as the all have there good points, I have played with the Peips, Barryovox, and the Ortovox a fair bit, and when it was time to decide which one to buy it was a tough choice, I liked that the Peips had the most range, and was extremaly simple to use (only 3 buttons On, Search,Send) the Barryovox Pulse I liked the Heart monitor feature and the fact that it had a beginner setting, and a setting for once you got more involved with the beacon you could make more changes so that the beacon grew with you, and the Ortovox I liked the price. When I finally purchased one I got the Barryovox Pulse and I am really happy with that choice, the only reason I chose it over the Peips was because some of the guys in my riding group had the Barryovox so what the heck we might as well have the same, My suggestion to you is try them if you know someone with one borrow it and try it then pick the one you liked the best

Most of the guys in our group have gone to the Barryovox Pulse. Like said above, they all have their pro's and con's so you need to try them all. the best way I found to try them is to sign up for a beacon work shop. Most places that do work shops have a wide variety to try.

I have a Barryvox also. Really like it, find it really easy to use. I can search way better with it then Pieps for some reason. Probably just me but I did the test search at Quartz in Golden. I found them quicker with the Barryvox, and it just seemed easier to use then anything else.

I bought a barryvox this year also and so far it works great. I like the fact that I don't have to dial in the distance like I did on my sos.
