I was looking at a truck on Kijiji, White 2009 f-350 Lariat, It was in great showroom condition, Has a bedrug, canopy, and some other goodies.

I asked them to hold the truck for me, so I could get it inspected. Dieseltech did the inspection. Highly recommended! Great people, and awesome service.

I asked the owner of the vehicle for maintenance reports, oil changes, etc.. The last record of this truck's oil change was 20,000 km ago. He swore that it was 5000 ago and it needed a change soon. Truck had 75,000 km on it.

Oil analysis report showed high levels of metal content, evidence of piston wear, high silicon content and many other red flags. I know it could have been because of the 20000 km interval giving higher than normal readings, but I decided to walk from the deal.

Anyway, the inspection, with the analysis came to just under 2 hundy, and I was glad to pay that.

i seen guys doing 50000km intervals on the cummins and oil report still showing good. crazy. with my amsoil in my cummins i can do 15000km no problem, but usually stick to 12k. not sure the oil he was using, but good catch anyways. this guy is at 410 000 miles on it now.

I go 10k on synthetic in my diesel. The company does the same for all their trucks on semi synthetic.

I have also heard of people doing longer intervals, but they change the filter.

One thing was that he had an aftermarket intake which needed serious cleaning... hence the Silicon reading, which can lead to the Metal reading.

He texted me later and said "HAHA I found the window oil change sticker and it didn't need a change for another 500k". I told him that that was even WORSE! if the high levels are showing that quick, then there is definitely a problem.

Anyways, the guy said, "Oh well, it'll sell, I'll just change the oil and throw her back on line, someone will buy it."

Always ALWAYS! ask for the service records.

It is amazing at how many people can't be bothered to change their oil on a regular basis. Talking about cutting off your nose despite your face. What is worse is how many clowns will pull this crap on unsuspecting buyers.

I run Shell Rotella T full syn 5w40 and I go till my light comes on. Usually between 10-12k. Used oil analysis done every time too.

OP, good thing you did your homework. Without a doubt saved you a lot of headache. Even on a relatively new truck people can inflict some major abuse.

I am running the exact same truck. Just turned over 600,000km's. Oil change every 8-10,000. Faithfully.
Take care of that truck, and it will take care of you. I have beaten the hell driving my truck on the leases and roads i have to go down, but still maintain it on the regular.

I change my oil in my 2005 Honda civic every 16000. I use full synthetic everytime. My daily commute is 200kms except for the 2 months I am in school. I am around 375000kms and no issues yet though I have not done an oil analysis yet.My wife has a 2010 equinox and if you go by the oil life moniter you could go 20 000 plus before the oil life reaches 0. I usually change around 30% though.

the other good money spent is an inspection.... could have 50 k on it and need 2000 plus worth of work....

also not sure if anyone knows but lots of lease backs that come from like budget rentals ect... they change oil at 15000 or more km... with reg minerial oil...

who wants a bagged car that has over 15000 km on oil changes..... not this guy... will never buy a lease back cause they salesguy all ways says it was a local older couple that leased it....

20,000 km oil change is a bit excessive but if you change your oil based on hour meter instead of km's you would be better off my last truck had 7000 hours and only 153,000 changed oil every 200 hours and somtimes only put on 2500km between oil changes

Best to change oil based on oil analysis reccomendation, no two peoples driving habits is the same. Idiling, towing, city, highway so many different factors that change how often you need to change your oil. I go around 4000-6000km on my Cummins, don't put to many km on so sometimes I only change it because it's been 6 months.

I don't see why some people are so cheap, oil changes aren't expensive.

And yes leases are bad. My dad just turned his 07 dodge in a while ago, did the tranny once, never did the t-case or diffs, did the motor like every 5-7k though. No one cares because in the end it's not your truck.

Like to know how you are getting 28mpg. I had the same truck and on a good day the best I would get was 16. Averaged 15mpg. Maybe I drive harder??
