Ok did some searching on this but could not find anybody that ask this question yet.

What kind of belt life are you all getting?

I have read that some people change them every year but what kind of mileage are you putting on those belts.

With proper breakin what should a person expect?

Thanks

I typed in "belt life" and good old S&M came up with 90 threads regarding belt life!

With the 377 belt on my 08XPX, I can go half a season. I'm not a racer nor an avid high-marker. Just a guy who rides 100 times/year in and out of trees, up hills, breaking trail, riding creek bottoms, sometimes to 8000' but mostly 6800-7200'. Hope that helps.....:d

Wow, that's a pretty subjective question. Depends on a lot of things like horsepower, clutch alignment, venting/cooling, brand of belt, type of riding, etc. I typically get 2 seasons on my M7 with AC belts, but on my M1000 1 season's about it. The wifes old 670 Summit is on it's 4th season on 1 Dayco belt. Son's turbo'ed M1000 easily goes through a couple or 3 a season depending on how crazy he gets with it.

Like I said....pretty subjective. :d

There are a few contributing factors for extended belt life. Proper clutch alignment is a must. Clutches that travel true don't put excessive stress on your belt. Keeping your clutches clean and maintained will also prolong life of your belt. My two older sleds were geared and clutched for my needs also, this was a must for putting unnesessary stress on the clutches and belt. When the sleds are sitting I pull my belts so they don't conform to an irregular shape and store them in a warm and dry place. When unloading I like to warm up the engine and rotating the track before I back it off my deck.

Now with that said I had the original belts on my '99 and '01 RMKs until I sold them last month. 1600 and 1200 miles on the machines and I pulled a kids caboose with both. My Dragon has only 470 miles on it but it's still new. Being meticulous about the little things goes along way...but that's just me

I've road with guys that have blown 2 belts in one day but you also get what you pay for. Cheap belts are not sometimes the best way to go. At $200 a pop for belts now with my newer sleds I'll be even more meticulous :d

usually go through 4-5 belts a year but on my 09 800 XP 163 I bought last year with stock gearing and clutching I have 2200 miles on same belt. Gearing and clutching are very important.

I also did that but those threads do not answer my question.

Thanks for the responses so far but i am trying to gauge mileage not seasons.

you could ride 10 km a season or 10000 km.

Thanks again.

I'm no GearHead but I don't think you're gonna get a concrete answer with specifics about exactly what mileage you should expect out of a belt. So many factors, as mentioned above. Why worry about it? Just ride and when you're due for a change you'll have your answer. If that life is less than you expect it should be then get things checked out.

sounds like he is doing forensic accounting on cost per mile of snowmobiling....lol

like sno ghost says, you will never get a definite answer on miles per belt. soooo many variables....

Put it that way, the first belt a 166 (stock from the factory) was 206 kms and the second belt a 166 (different production run) about 1000 kms.

When I went to the 377 it was close to 1500 kms and last year 1 belt (another 377) did the season which was over 1500 kms. A short km season because of a broken leg.

I am not looking for a definite answer just an average across the board.

everybody has different setups, sleds, belts etc. i know that will make a difference on the life of the belt but it will average out.

Last season I put about 2000 kms on my 800 Rev. Brand new belt at the start of the season and I'm gonna put a new one on just to start this season. That is completely stock clutches and no venting. Might still be ok, but why go with ok.

I guess the way I look at it, it really doesnt matter...You need a belt to run the sled bottom line...Take a spare and change when required. Or sell the sled, and your costs will be minimized drastically.

Who said anything about minimizing costs?

I am just interested in what people are getting for belt life.

Nobody...Just took a stab at the reason for the question. Its kinda like asking how much fuel you use. There is no right answer or even 10 answers that will match. I have 2 daughters that I ride with. One on an M6 and one on an M7. Which one uses more fuel?? The M6 cause she rides at WOT all day then poaches gas from us to get back home LOL

You could measure your next 10 belts and Im pretty sure there will be little consistency.

Anyways, if cost isnt a factor, take 2 spares, as I too have ridden with guys that have blown 2 in a day.

My 01 700 Doo has had the same belt on for 6 years, i pull it off every fall & wash it with dish soap & warm water, rinse & let dry on a rack. No problems to this date, belt is in great shape. I also have a factory spec ( no mods) 08 xp, went all last season with the same belt & it still looks perfect. But maybe i am exceptionally lucky.

Hmmmm! How inconsistent is belt wear. I used OEM belts in my apex from new. The first belt lasted about 1500. It disintegrated while carving a deep creek bed on a warm day -2or 3. Next one got me back to the trailer and was destroyed the next weekend after about 100k rippin across a lake WOT. Had to settle on a cheap spare because I didn't expect to need another belt so soon and it lasted 60k. I said OK this belt should be broke in now...mwaa...vroooooom!...face against mountain bar. (I'm one of those guys that has blown 2 belts in one day). Got another OEM belt on and it ran for over 2000. Trashed it banging drifts on a warm spring day. Gave the POS to my wife and I suspect the belt on there will last the rest of her life. Kids 570 fan had the same belt for 7 years. Haven't changed the belt in the citation in 13 years.:d
