Belt issues on the 850

You're right...venting isn't a cure all, but after tearing a few G4's down now, any heat has zero place to go. They have these things so buttoned up to meet sound regulations, there are few pathway for heat evacuation. Heat rises and look at the top of the cowl - heat surrounds the intake system. It also did on the XM and I was always surprised we never had a bog issues with the intake being preheated. Vents on the top of the panels and up are going to allow a lot of heat to get out of there. SLP is a few weeks away from releasing a full vent kit, JC has something nearly done, as does Xtreme Air Vents. Xtreme has a number of vents on their site, but I'd be timid to place too many on the backside of the panel with the contact they've been making with the coolant bottle. Those panels flex and are pretty thin back there as it is without cutting more out even if they are replacing with a vent.

Venting and removing foam and felt is the easy way to go.........coolant bottle on the other side btw.
17K and mods needed is the sad part.

I am gathering belt deflection I where the belt is sitting in the secondary.

Humm In the XP days there was a venting rave with trying to eliminate clutch heat. Once better alignment, clutching, and gearing setups were realized that went away. Now that venting trend is starting a comeback. Interesting.

I to believe venting is not the solution. I guess for the guys with the issue that have to keep buying $200 belts on their dime I would be proactive as opposed to waiting for BRP to come up with a solution. In 08' BRP started warranting the bad belts for awhile and then when guys started coming into the store with 4-5 on their arm they started backing down. And then there were the guys that were so mad they threw there belts in the snow and then wanted a new belt with no belt to show as proof. Those days were very stressful back then. HaHa...

LOL I always carried two spare belts back then and a plastic grocery bag to put the blown one in.

your gauge will show you the recorded max rpm if you cycle through it

I just read 8491 on mine .. on clicker 3

Could be a cause of the belt issue .. going to look for a weight kit, and in the meantime clicker down to 1

I would think it hits the rev limiter before revving that high. It's probably an RPM flare from when the belt blew.

I hit 8491 as a max rpm at one point too. Clickers on 3. But when watching the gage doing some pulls a consistent 7900 to 8000. Clickers on 3.

Mine says 84xx rpm too. Gauge is around 8000rpm reading.

Go back and read all the fixes for the 08 xp when it had it's belt issues
BRP's fix was an upgraded belt. Quit using the 166 belt that worked on the Revs. Upgraded belt was wider and could handle the heat better. They took a few years to change the belt guard on the XP.

Better quality bushings in the TRA as well.

I've been looking and comparing stock clutch setups over the past few years between the 850 and the Etec to try and get a handle on how the Pdrive is coming setup compared to a TRA. I know it's challenging without really knowing the ramp profiles of each, but there are a lot of similarities. What is really jumping out at me in the spreadsheet I've made is the secondary spring. Helixes are the same, primary spring are of similar forces, gearing at 1:1 on a 154 is very similar... leading me to believe the ramps in the TRA and Pdrive are acting fairly similarily. What is quite different is the secondary spring. The spring used in the G4 is a Blue 157/221 whereas the spring used in last years Etec was a Black 157/303 no matter on track length or depth. Based simply on that it would almost appear the secondary is shifting too soon putting the machine into a higher gear quicker than previous years. This could easily explain why the belt is heating. I would be real curious to see what a change to simply the Black secondary spring would do.

Dealers everywhere are claiming no such issues and haven't heard of any belt issues with their customers...
