Beacon interference

I know that a cell phone can screw with a beacons antenna, seen it first hand and read a few articles on it. But does any one know if having a garmin gps/2 way on you will affect it? Or if the bca radios, spots and in reaches have any effect on the beacon? I keep my phone in bag on the sled for this reason but have a tendency to carry the two way on me.

Put them both on your kitchen table and search with another beacon and report back the results. I see you're not far from me so if you don't have a spare beacon you can borrow mine.

Have a spare, will have to wait a week or two till I get home. The avy thread kinda got me thinking on it. Will for sure try it when I get back was just wondering if any one else had dealt with it before

If I remember right it still does. Mine was on during a rescue simulation and couldn't believe how much it screwed it up. And lots of people don't realize that cells will screw beacons

In the fall when we were doing our Beacon practicing we tested with cell phone placement and could get find a problem with proximity. Haven't tried with the Rinos though.

Yes it does, we tested this with most transceivers and it screwed with them all.

Me: "You gonna turn that off before you start riding again?"
Them: "No, it's my camera and my GPS too."
Me: "Might as well shut off your beacon then."

Ppl seem to only worry about cell phones. I've done some home testing and I found that EVERY electronic device if close enough to the beacon will affect it. My new beacon does not seem to be affected as much tho. I try to keep the phone, vid camera and other electronics on the sled. If I'm searching for someone those electronics will be far enough away not to have any effect of the searching.

Why? only effects on search mode not transmit. No effect on search mode more than 30cm away. Do you search with your phone and beacon in your hand? Don't spread mis-information!

Not misinformation, smarts. When that phone is on and in your pocket and you go to search for some one it will screw up the readings. That's what happened to me on the simulation. Time is precious and when the adrenalin is flowing you won't be thinking "gee I should turn my phone off so I can find my buried buddy", but hey maybe that's just me

Biggest thing that's good, is if your phone is forgot on, it doesn't screw with transmit mode which is the big picture, because 99.9 % of the time that's what it's on

"Biggest thing that's good" sorry but i have to disagree with you. Beacons are a two way street. Needs to send AND recieve. One is no good without the other. Maybe in big groups not as important. But riding with only one or two others.... its great that it doesn't mess with transmit, and yep 99.9% of the time it won't matter. But do you want to chance you not finding your buds in time, or your buds finding you cause guys can't be bothered to put the phone away.

With elbows bent looking down at beacon, probably not far off. If you are trying to justify having your phone on, fly at it dude, hope i dont have to depend on you for help. I have personally had phone in pocket and had problems picking up signal. Reason for thread was to see if the other electronics we typically carry cause same issues.

Rinos gave us a fake signal when on search.

Seemed to be a consistent 19-26m ghost search contact. Both Rino 530 and 650. Just for ****s chased it around for a while to see if it disappeared, it didn't

If you are buried with your phone on in your pocket or in your sled and down say one meter....you think the searching transceiver above the snow is going to care that it's 30 cm away? It can and does affect the signals. Throws the searcher off. Causes confusion and rescue time wasted. Chance you're willing to take?

So tried the test last nite.... Ortovox s+1 beacon on right side of body, bca radio in airbag backpack on left side and remote on left front pack strap, and iphone in left side pockets(tried in pants, and jacket pocket).... And had same results testing with and without radio and iphone.... Tried from all different directions. Absolutely no interference

That's good to hear. I have the same beacon as LID. so maybe just some beacons more susceptible to problems. That one being the pulse is supposed to pick up heartbeat I believe. Hmmm
