Shitty deal, absolutely the worst time to loose power and the crew knew they were in trouble by broadcasting mayday. The boat supposedly had repairs done while at port, would not want to be the chief engineer/mechanic on that boat right now.

Have a look at the time lapse of the traffic on the bridge, there was a lull in traffic just as the boat struck the support, could of been way worse.

Another story out there is the crew reversed the engine and that's why there was all the black smoke before it hit, they had it wound out in reverse trying to stop.

Problem is with those ships, as soon as you engage reverse you loose all steering, because there is no longer water flowing over the rudder.

No but I have been through the ucletaw rapids on a 50 foot halibut boat , ebb tide and a pooched autopilot. Control is left to a prayer and good luck .

That's fun, Its one thing to lose control out fishing. Taking out critical infrastructure with a 1000 foot cargo ship is something else.
Its next level incompetence at best.

It reminds me of the novel Atlas Shrugged

You would think the emergency gen would give power to the rudder, not sure why they had no rudder control. But my lithium batteries are on a ship hopefully not going to that port.

A coasting ship with rudder control is almost useless when the speed and the weight of the vessel, currents etc come into play. The propeller needs to be turning, putting one of those big engines into reverse is not like hitting the button on your sled.
Not the first time a ship had downed a bridge.

Do you have some examples of other times this has happened?

Regarding why it turns right, I saw one interview saying it's likely because they dropped anchor(s) while moving and the ship tends to yaw around the anchor with more grab.
