VANCOUVER - The province's successful bait car program which has dramatically reduced the number of stolen cars in recent years is adding bait trailers to its operations.

Solicitor General Shirley Bond announced the initiative today saying police were determined to stop trailer theft which now numbers more than 500 stolen units a year.

Along with the bait trailer, police also unveiled thier list of the 10 most wanted car thieves in B.C.

Modelled after the Bait Car program, which involves cars equipped to alert police to their theft and capture the thieves on video, the Bait Trailer is intended to cut down the theft of trailers in B.C., which occurs at a rate of about 500 a year, police say.

The Bait Trailer was unveiled in Richmond this morning, where B.C. Solicitor General Shirley Bond kicked off Auto Crime Enforcement Month.

Last year B.C. auto theft was down 22 per cent compared to 2009, and thefts from inside vehicles were down 15 per cent.

But trailer theft has remained constant, with about 500 trailers stolen every year in B.C., Bond's ministry said in a news release.

The new bait trailers can range from recreational and camping-type trailers, to mobile cargo and utility units.
