Just wondering if there are any backhoe experts on here. Thinking one of these would be a handy unit to have around the farm. We are going to be building the house here in the next year or so as well, so it should pay for itself by the time I dig the basement, put in septic field, power, water, landscape, etc. Ideally looking to spend around 20k.

Any words of wisdom?

Look for a ex city machine. They do come up and are generally in mint shape. I grabbed one off the island from brandt tractor, really nice shape and cheap. John Deere 310se full loader. I'm thinking any used municipality equipment is usely in great shape. Put the word out at the dealers and they'll keep you posted on thing that come up.

Your not getting much of a hoe for 20 k . You need a 4x4 or they are useless, pretty much. So , you are looking at high hours in that price range... Case , Deere , cat are all good ... Stay away from JCB. There are deals out there though...you might also look at a little excavator/ Skidsteer combo too....??? the backhoe is not going to dig much of a basement . Cheaper to bring in a 200 excavator for a few hours... For the big stuff.

In short if you get a good deal they are very handy, if on the other hand you have a major breakdown ..., you will lose your azz on it. Luck of the draw!

Notice how I never put in what I paid....great advice here for sure, especially the brake down issue. Yard work looks cheap untill there's oil poring out of a tanked trany.

Yeah I agree with what you guys are saying. Decided to go to something better and split it with my brother. My dad is out in Alberta right now and gonna check out a 2007 case 580 SM with 4000 hours on it. Definitely more than 20k, but one bad breakdown on an old machine and I would be kicking myself for not buying something decent. And I agree it would be more efficient to bring in a 200 to dig my basement, but if I take my time at it with the backhoe it will be fun. Plus Im only going down about 5 feet at the most so this will work fine.

Thanks for the feedback.

Newer with low hours is always the way to go. We use old high hour equipment on our farm and our repair bills are insane.
3 powershifts, 2 motor jobs, 2 pto rebuilds, a couple planetaries and a MFWD axle rebuild all in one year. Talk about an expensive lesson lol

I have a 2001 Case 580 4x4 extendahoe with 6350hrs. I paid 26g if I recall a couple years ago. I havent even changed the oil yet(not due on hr meter) i did however put one front tire on it and a battery and also a new Pioneer deck w/bluetooth and new speakers. It is plumbed for aux hydraulics on the back to run vibe pack or auger but I dont have the attachments. One thing I wish it had was the front clam bucket. Knock on wood...! Good luck

Well the 2007 case fell through. Thing was rusted all to chit and in pretty rough shape. Plus the guy told me he would take 35, and then said he was firm on 37 when they went and looked at it.

So if anyone has a line on a good used unit let me know.

Any advice on the best way to get a piece of equipment checked out when it is far away? Send a mechanic out to have a look? That one in Vancouver that tripster posted seems like what I am looking for. Ads can be so misleading though. Anyone on here from Vancouver area? :)

I'm in the area but am so busy at work right now so I wouldn't know when or if I could look at it. If you get the serial # and call the local Inland dealer maybe they have been servicing it. 604 607 8555 and ask for equip service. I also saw this ad today 2004 Case 590M super Backhoe

Thats about right for that 2004. I just bought a 1997 case 580 super K in December for 22,500. It has 6000 hrs on it. Sure is handy!

Well frick.......now Im torn. A guy I know locally has a 2004 John Deere 50hp tractor with a backhoe attachment for sale. Definitely not going to be in the same league as a backhoe, but would get a lot more use out of it on the farm. Would do any digging that I need done except the basement, and a guy should probably hire that out anyways. Anyone have experience with the tractor mounted hoes?

That 2004 590 case in Whistler seems like a pretty good deal. Check how many hours are on it. Remember, when you are done with it, you will probably get most of your money back when you sell it. That 590 will do your basement too. looks like it has a decent cleanout bucket on it too.

Well I bought that 580 that tripster posted. Trying to figure out the logistics of paying for it and getting it back to Creston. Have a backhaul lined up for a decent price but the guy cant do it for a week or two. Also looking for suggestions on a place to stick it in the meantime. Dont really want to wire the guy money and not have some kind of possession of the unit. Its on the border of langley and surrey.

I've got a half ton and a 4-place aluminum flatdeck. Where's the pickup?

(that's a joke)
