AVi: The 1st Avy Beacon Application for iPhone - The Backcountry Skiing Blog I first heard about these a couple wks. ago. :yikes:I sure hope none of you will be using these instead of a tried/tested and true avalanche transceiver, and yes there is an app for a smart phone too. What are your thoughts, what do you think the downfalls would be? I`m not really impressed with this this part of their advertising, " Make sure your buddy with the padded wallet gets out alive so you don’t have to buy drinks that night at the bar."[h=2]Features:[/h]

Who's your buddy? You'll know with Sole Survivor.

Sole Survivor
As if Multiple burials aren’t stressful enough, what with all the digging and searching — you also have to worry about who you are digging up first? Are you going to find Steve first? You know he’s going to slack on the work of shoveling anyone else out, probably needing a break every few shovels, leaving most of the work to you! Want to dig up your partner Ben, instead of “The Dude” that decided to drop in behind on your trail breaking effort without an offer to help? Fear not, with Sole Survivor, you can program the phone number of your AVi equipped iPhone-carrying partner to find them first. Make sure your buddy with the padded wallet gets out alive so you don’t have to buy drinks that night at the bar.

Yeah that's disgraceful really. Thing is there will be a ton of idiots that will latch onto this as a cheap alternative to buying the proper gear and training

Scary..... that's the only word I can use to describe this.

I think we need to write some nasty well worded letters to the programmers who built this monstrosity.....

Apparently there are 3 companies selling the apps now. Glad to see your responses. First thing I thought of was "how often do I even have cell service when I ride", then "how often does my cell battery go dead in the cold" and then "my cell isn`t even on when I ride in case it interferes with my beacon". You all know people will try to save a buck and use these apps, I am just hoping you will all help get the word out there. Article may be old I just googled it. We were just told this by the CAC and they are concerned also, it`s for real and happening now

Maybe some comments to the marketers along the 'legal / liability implication' line might make them change their mind, I know the lawsuit stuff is huge in the US...

Great to hear the response from you guys regarding these.

The Avy Folks are already all over this. As a member of the Avalanche Centre team, I can tell you these apps were a large cause for alarm and a lot of research and investigation has been on going.

The CAC will soon be releasing some detailed public information.

For now and the future, stick with your transceiver, learning it inside out and practice!

Safe Riding!

If anyone uses this... I keep my phone in the truck so I won't be able to find you.

Feel free to call back between the hours of "not sledding".

Yah I hope no one thought this would be a good idea! Is there a disclaimer on the app that says it shouldn't be used as an actual beacon ? I would think the only guys that would get this app is those poser sledders that only sled to show how cool they are, there phone would have a monster sticker on the back and put in the same pocket as there white sunglasses lol

Sent while sitting on the toilet when I should be working!

“Not only are these new apps incapable of connecting with other avalanche transceivers, they are also incompatible between themselves, so one type of app can’t find another,” CAC Executive Director Gilles Valade said in a statement released on Thursday, October 24
