Fri afternoon Feb 27th Yimr area between Nelson & Salmo, this fellow was part of a snowmobiling / snow boarding group when the avy hit him he was on his snow board, they were taking their sleds up into the back bowl above Barrett Lake getting dropped off up top then snow boarding to the bottom.
The wife and I happened to be in the area sledding thought we would take a run up towards Huckleberry / Barrett Lake going up towards Huckleberry turnoff noticed some recent activity on the slope so turned towards Barrett took some extra precautions on the way up most of the known chutes have slid got about ¾ way up and decided to turn back starting to get late in the afternoon and we just had that uneasy feeling, conditions were not the best on Friday and this area is known for avalanche activity we colud also hear other snowmobilers in the area ahead of us and not far off.
Just after we turned around a fellow came up on his sled said there was an Avy his fried was caught in and partially buried he may have a broken leg and his group was having a difficult time trying to reach him due to the location he was at, they could speak to him and he had requested a helicopter due to his injuries. Darkness was setting in soon no cell service and no one had a SPOT (a locating device one can call 911 from anywhere and mark your GPS location) I believe 3 out of the group remained with him on the ridge. With one from the group the wife and I followed him down to the parking lot he proceeded to get help we had also flagged the trail on the way out knowing by the time a rescue was dispatched it would be dark and the trail may be difficult to find.
Soon after RCMP showed up at the parking lot and informed us a helicopter did get out to the man but could not evacuate him however the helicopter did manage to get 2 more rescuers into the location to assist. So now a ground rescue would have to evacuate the injured man out. Nelson Search & Rescue and with the use of 2 sleds one from the original group and another they proceeded to go in and assist with the rescue.
The man was then evacuated and is in good condition, glad everyone is back home this is good news to hear as it may have been a lot worse, you can never be prepared enough it seams in the back country.
This was the news report on the incident.

This was the news report CBC on the incident and have a look at some of the comments people have posted on this report.......
We also assisted with extra fuel, oil, blankets, water, energy bars tie downs anything to help out in the rescue.

The posted comments are scary....some people seem to jump right in with both feet without reading the information and then they open their mouth to change feet....

A good rescue; everyone working together. One of the motto's of the back-country...bring 'em home no matter what...
