i find it rather interesting that heli ski oporations are allowed to continue in these areas .any reason as to the why ?in canada you can still hunt caribou, mind you not in revy but it still happens in this country . why such restrictions ? any one know?why revy is singled out .

I think it is because if they shut down a tenured operator they have to reimburse them for business lost. As far as I`m concerned if it`s all about the caribou it should be shut down to everyone, frustrating isn`t it? Revy singled out is an understatement.

We will be having a meeting towards the end of the mo. hopefully with City, Chamber, Tourism and business owners, hope you guys and gals can attend.
Letters have been going out in the mail for 3 wks. now, still no reply. We are getting together tonight again to package up another 200 more:d, THANKS EVERYONE for continuing to send in the letters of support.

Oh and check this out, another 156,000 hectares.

Support given to snowmobile fight against caribou closures

Council agreed to support the local snowmobiling organizations fight against new caribou closures

The vote was 3-2 in favour of sending the letter, with councillors Scarcella, Peter Frew and Steve Bender voting in favour and councillors Chris Johnston and Antoinette Halberstadt voting against the motion.

Andrea Threatful, the executive director of the Snowmobile Revelstoke Society, said the closures were not done with proper consultation.

"We are looking to resume negotiations with government and to provide alternative workable solutions," she told council.

Couns, Halberstadt and Johnston both said council should get information from both sides before lending support to anyone.

Please continue to send in your letters of support. Packages have gone out in the mail everyday for 4 wks. now, really appreciate your added comments. Still no reply from Gov.

Hey PP, do you recall what year the snowmobile closures began for caribou areas? I read the report you sent me, and i find it interesting that there were some years that the populations declined so fast.
In my opinion, the sledders help the Caribou. I have seen them on Boulder many times, and have seen there tracks and droppings at the base of Super Bowl, which is probably the busiest area of any snowmobile destination in BC.

When we ride Keystone, we alsways see the Caribou and there tracks in the areas that are open to sleds. You can tell they must like the packed tracks to walk on. I am sure it saves them a lot of energy, and speeds up the process of getting to food supplies.

The map shows the closures put into effect in 2000.
The report is a concern:

"The entire late winter range of the Frisby-Queest subpopulation is subject to intense recreational pressure (snowmobiling at Eagle Pass, Frisby, Boulder and Queest, catskiing, heliskiing and ski touring). Although the majority of the Columbia North late-winter range is closed to snowmobiling, use continues in suitable late-winter habitat at Caribou Basin (on weekends), Bourne/Pettipiece Pass and Mt. Grace where only partial closures or permitted openings are in effect. For Columbia South, snowmobiling continues to occur at Sale Mt. and at Keystone Creek/Standard Basin, all of which have partial closures in effect. Within Mount 9 Revelstoke and Glacier National Parks, ski touring is expanding in popularity and range. A closure was implemented at Mt. Klotz in 2008, in order to minimize disturbance. Outside of the national parks, heli-skiing is active throughout most of study area."

The pic. is taken by MoE on a compliance flight at Caribou Basin. Animals are centre left, see where they are heading?

So for 8 wks. and a couple days this wk. your support letters have gone out in the mail 761 to date. I have run out of letters so it would be great if we could get a bunch more come in. Apparently there are 200 peeps working the Premiers office and it is their job to reply to your letters, mine was in the first mail out and I haven`t gotten a reply yet nor has the club or society.

Copies of all the letters have also gone to City Hall and the Revelstoke Accomodation Assoc. now.

We had a meeting with our MLA and he also wrote a letter of support for us to the Premier.
At the city coucil meeting this past Tues. the North Columbia Enviromental Society asked city coucil to sign a letter of support that they had prepared, coucil voted to not sign the letter presented but to write a letter on their own.
There were statements and comments that we had great concern with, the club and society have replied to NCES with letters and it was cc`d to the city.

We are keeping up the fight here in Revy everyone and are looking for more letters of support. :D please mention it to your buddies in case they haven`t heard.

someone needs a cut and paste lesson. ;)

Your signed letters of support were presented in the House on Mon. Oct. 17 by our MLA Norm Macdonald. We came back from the Puyallup Snow Show with 111 more signed letters to go out in the mail this wk.
Copies of these letters have also gone out the City of Revelstoke and the Revelstoke Accomodation Assoc. We attended another City chamber meeting because a letter from the North Columbia Enviromental Society had us concerned (their letter was not signed, the city wrote their own). We attended a Chamber social after the support letters we presented to them were returned to us, we had the opportunity to speak to a lot of local business owners. There is also a meeting being planned with the City so we can get together with everyone at one time and voice our concerns, the NCES will be attending this meeting.
We will have form letters at the Edmonton Snow Show, come by and see us
