From my experience I find a 22 cal rifle to be very effective. A shotgun tends to be too loud and you don't want to alert the neighbors. I usually have to shoot 5-7 beavers a year at my in laws place every year. I would say don't sit out to early as the beavers won't be out until its almost dark, then just blast away. If you shot them in the head while they are swimming you may have to be prepared to fish them out or else they will float to the surface and provide evidence of your misdeed. If they are in the irrigation channel they may float downstream away from you place if you are lucky. You can also wait until they are on-shore to shoot them too. Another method, but less humane, is to shoot them in the body so they swim away and die somewhere else.

Like old Klein said 'shoot, shovel and shut up'!!Some guys that don't know might report you for shooting them.Might end up costing more than the trees are worth!Got rid of some for the guy I rent land from and couple days later the fish cops are stopping in asking if I knew anything about someone shooting some beavers!!A guy out bear baiting heard someone shooting at some beavers!!Needless to say the land owner kept driving his quad around the bait stations till the season was over for a little pay back!!

Isn't beaver classified as a varmint, I'm probably wrong but I thought it was legal to kill beaver if they are damaging property.

You can hunt or trap them as long as you have permission from the land owner. You can't kill them on crown land unless you have a registered trapline there or the county or fish cops hired you to get rid of them!

The guy baiting bears was probably just p!ssed off that someone else was shooting his bait. We used to use beaver carcasses for bear bait all the time. You and the guy baiting bears need to get together and find a solution that works for both of you. You get rid of the beavers, he gets more bait, and no evidence for any fish cop.

An old timer up here almost died over this kind of thing. The beaver got him by the thigh and cut his femoral artery. He was lucky his wife knew how to stem the bloodflow or he would have bled out before they got him to the hospital.

Not sure what your property is like or how close your neighbors are so a gun might be out of the question. I had bylaw knocking on my door last weekend for shooting my bow in the yard. Wasn't putting anyone or anyones property at stake. Piss me off. I can see if I was shooting with other peoples houses in shooting distance. It nope shooting towards crown land trees. And it's not like I miss my target either!

I have the same pain in the azz issues here with beavers, a few years ago a buddy's beloved full grown German Shepard got tangled up with a beaver, unfortunately it got shredded and died from blood loss on their front steps :( I never thought they could do that but ever since they are varmits in my book.

My wife talked to Fish and Wildlife today. They don't do beavers or coyotes they say as they are to labor intensive for the staff they are dealt. They put us onto the county who in turn turned us onto environment who basically said it is not there problem and to call Fish and Wildlife. Then a fish cop phoned us back and asked us how many trees we had. I told him 200 and he said that we should wrap wire around the bases, 3ft high on the trees we wanted to save.:yikes:I told him that wasn't happening. So then he said we can trap them or shoot them. Traps are in the $500 range from the supplier we were sent to. You need a permit to shoot them and the guy who will be doing the shooting needs to fill it out and needs to have an FAC. I don't (fawk you Liberal govt) so I am hiring my nephew to do it for me as he is an enthusiastic gun owner and has an FAC. Thanks for all the help guys and I'll let you know how it pans out.:frusty:
