My name is Pete Howell: I am a proud Canadian, born and raised including an Albertan. Without question, like many reading this now, I'm patriotic and passionate for this province and especially Canada. With that being said, we're in some serious financial and economic trouble if you look at what's going on in Alberta and across Canada in other provinces.

Alberta: Get it together please!
Sadly, I'm not so confident in our leadership across the board or as proud anymore and I'm sure many feel the same way on some levels. In years past, Alberta was once a great province and economic powerhouse that was well respected and recognized globally. People would flock from across Canada and around the world to Alberta in order to work and or invest in our province. We are losing our luster in many areas and maybe some credibility along the way.

Today, Alberta is financially broke and no one seems to care or even have any clue how to change that anytime soon. Our current government is making Alberta a difficult and very expensive place to do business, which has taken away our competitive advantage in a global market.

We are heading into Astronomical debt loads that are off the financial charts never seen before in Alberta since the early 1940's. Sadly, future generations including my own kids and future grandchildren will be paying for these mistakes down the road if one does the math. Everything is projected on natural resources which are the very resources our current government, if they had their way, wants to keep it in the ground.

Projections are telling us that by 2020, Alberta will be $70 Billion dollars in debt with a province population around 4 Million people? Now let me translate that into personal additional debt; every Albertan will now owe or be responsible for ($17,500) of provincial debt when you put things into perspective. That number is on top of everything else you may already have in debt personally. So in 2020 before some of our own children are even adults they are already in significant debt?

Alberta Debt History: Record Breaking Debts

In recent days, once again, another company and global player within their respected industry has taken their business elsewhere and pulled out of our province in certain sectors. With that, they also took with them, Billions of dollars in business and assets including future investments worth even more. Not only that, they sent a message within industry that other companies just may follow their lead in the future too.

We have no one else to blame but ourselves in many ways because of our own egos, stubbornness, arrogance, ignorance and stupidity. That is directed at a select few well above my pay grade and provincial influence on all sides, because you are all failing so many hard working Albertans in my opinion.

Alberta, we are divided amongst ourselves on so many levels never seen before which is hurting many across the province. Until we pull together, more Albertans and companies will continue to struggle. Our province has already lost billions of dollars which includes tens of thousands of jobs in three years without a care in the world for some it seems.

There are countless numbers of companies and still counting that have downsized, gone bankrupt or pulled out of our province all together in the last two years alone. Worst of all, every day people are losing their homes and hurting on many levels. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be real efforts to improve the situation, economically and business speaking.

We are deeply divided and need to stop bickering and work together for the greater good of Alberta. Sadly, conservative minded people in this province are deeply divided and need to be united already. Please stop, focus more on working and coming together as one united front to try and turn this province around.

On the other side of the provincial coin, we have extreme concepts and unqualified incompetent people. In my opinion they are steering the ship full steam ahead on autopilot right into an iceberg. It's not helping an already tough situation and it's ruining business, opportunities and economics.

With anti-business policies and perceptions, our entire future is being thrown into the abyss of uncertainty. Some don't seem to truly understand the big picture or care which is mind boggling to many including myself.

My message is to all our public and private leadership: Please get it together already and stop messing up our province and destroying industry, business, jobs, peoples lively hoods and especially our future generations.

If you are the ones calling the shots right now, then please start to do your job properly and represent ALL Albertans, not just some personal ideological agenda that is a fairy tale.

Sorry to burst your bubble, your plan and some of your ideas are not sustainable or affordable long term for any province without raising taxes and putting the financial burden on everyone. They are hurting Albertans now and will hurt even more in the future.

Just look at how much debt in two years Alberta has got ourselves into and it's still climbing. Where will we be in two or four more years at this alarming rate? Someone has to eventually pay for that you know.

If you can't do your jobs, then please step aside and let someone else who's more competent. To the other side that is currently still divided; please put your differences aside and do something positive together as one. It let someone else walk right up the middle while the two sides were still fighting amongst one another.

Our province, industries and many Albertans are truly hurting and futures are uncertain in several areas and it could get even worse if we don't wake the heck up. We need jobs, sustainability, real leadership with fiscal responsibility and business friendly policies and attitudes. At this point we need someone; just anyone on either side to actually step up for this province and pull their heads out of their butt and get things done already.

We are all responsible for this mess that we got ourselves into on one level or another and need to work together to get us back out. Everyone needs to stop blaming oil prices as that is no longer the main reason or issues and is way beyond that almost three years into this roller coaster ride.

In the United States and other nations, they are back to business on many levels and going strong. However, here in Alberta we are still struggling, yet right next door in Saskatchewan, they are stronger and rank higher for places to invest in Oil & Gas? Why?

Our natural resources don't stop at the borders, so we must ask ourselves why? In my mind, like in business, you have to start looking at the top and work your way down to understand what is really going on.

It's very real and it's an economic and financial FUBAR and SNAFU on every level that it's now becoming embarrassing and threatens our future.

Once upon a time, not long ago, we were united as one great province on so many levels, we need that back today, not tomorrow. Alberta, we are very divided and we will fall further and harder if we don't come together, simple as that.

We need to capitalize on fossil fuels today in order to re-invest in future technologies that will eventually change certain aspects tomorrow. Canada and Alberta has to build pipelines to all tide waters especially to eastern Canada that imports a lot of resources and shouldn't. Canada and Alberta should also look at refining our own oil instead of sending it elsewhere. There is a global market that still needs oil and gas products.

Today, the United States is aiming for their own independence to supply resources and rely less on imports like Canadian resources. We need to capitalize and invest into our future by selling our products globally, not just to our once main customer to the south. Canada should not be importing as much oil and gas as they are doing now, we have enough in our own backyard and makes no sense.

What we are doing is penalizing and shooting ourselves in the foot which drives away existing and future investment and business opportunities.

Possible Solutions & Ideas:

Get rid of the provincial Carbon Tax altogether. It sounds good in theory, but will only raise the costs of everything under the sun and below our feet. Plus, it is another added cost to companies trying to compete with other industries and countries that don't have that extra layer of costs. It will not have any positive impact overall as Canada is less than 2% of a much bigger problem around the world.
Re-think raising minimum wage to $15.00/hr as we will have the highest in Canada and will also make us non-competitive in many sectors. It will also be higher if the highest even compared to our U.S. markets that Canadians have to compete with in many areas. It's also raising the price of goods and services across the board, very few companies if any can or will absorb those huge pay hikes. Consumer and industrial goods and services just went up again with inflation that we created ourselves on certain levels.
Have a united front for conservative minded Albertans and start fresh in order to choose their own futures. With out it, we will still be divided as a province, fall further into debt and lose our competitive advantage around the world in my opinion.
Pass legislation where Albertans will be able to take action against future governments when we lose faith. We should be able to have a 'Non-Confidence' vote when justified. There are many people in this province who are upset and feel abandoned on many levels. Today, we are powerless and have no choice but to sit back and watch our province and country fall apart before our own eyes in many ways. We the people should have the power to force elections when the majority feel the government is failing miserably and cast our Ballots.
Alberta should lower corporate taxes to be able to attract new business and industry plus keep the existing companies and opportunities in Alberta. We have raised corporate taxes which is hurting us. Other provinces including countries that we compete with have lowered corporate taxes.
Promote and support local businesses as they count for approximately 30% of Canada's GDP if my information is correct. They are very important to our economy and the current governments policies with changes such as Carbon Tax, raising minimum wage to $15.00/hr is hurting them badly and making it tough to keep afloat and compete with larger corporations or franchises.
Alberta needs to create a provincial 'Rainy Day Fund' where money would be put aside and managed professionally and properly this time. With the amount of revenue we have generated over the years, there should be way more in the bank. We should look at better systems such as Norway and even Alaska's system that saves and generates way more revenue from the natural resource industries than Alberta's current Heritage Fund. We are pissing away our future and will have nothing when we need it.
One last and very important solution would be to have a proper royalty plan that does not allow Alberta to sell our future away at a loss for generational Albertans. It also has to be good for both sides and not one sided. Maybe a sliding scale based on economic conditions which also includes transfer payments to other provinces. I don't agree how much Alberta has to pay out and seldom get anything in return when we are hurting economically. It's an outdated structure and needs to be reviewed and adjusted properly.
I hope I'm wrong, but there are more dark days ahead for Alberta if we don't get our sh!t together once and for all. Everyone should smarten up and do your jobs better please. There are many businesses, millions of every day people and future Albertans that really need you right now more than ever before.

Alberta's future is up to all of us!

I agree with everything he has to say.... my fear is that many many folks will dispute everything he has to say, and those of us who agree are generally complacent.

I managed to get it posted up on my facebook.
