Alberta/BC back country land closures thread.

I find it interesting in areas that already have zero ATV use/low human interaction the caribou populations are still declining. There has been studies that show the declining caribou populations in existing provincial parks. The results are typically linked with increased wolf populations. The snowmobile foot print on our mountain ranges is infinitely small. We have such a small area that we can even access. With our 100s of square KMs of back country I just don't understand closing the less than 1% of area that is accessible by snowmobiles. At elevation and 20ft of snow is not the caribous primary habitat yet that area but be restricted? Most Canadians agree that preserving our land is a high priority but not being able to access it makes no sense. The recent push in both Alberta and BC to shut down all access to back country other than foot, horse, or helicopter basically makes it inaccessible. Our population is low and our land mass is huge but apparently its for looking at from a highway. Does this also mean any back country oil/gas, logging, roads, cat skiing etc will also be restricted? Please share the link if you want your family members to be able to enjoy the back country vs just looking at it. Once these areas get shut down seems impossible to get them reopened.

A wolf cull is needed in the Rockies or the caribou will deplete till there are none left. Wolf packs are growing, and they need to eat. The caribou are easy targets.

I'm pretty sure we passed a grey wolf on the highway to japer last weekend, the pickup didn't even phase it. He was feeding in the middle of the road on roadkill but the oncoming semi probably added him to the pile. I've never seen one so close to population, they don't care

I am willing to put boots on the ground and personally hunt them in contribution to keeping our riding areas open and our caribou populations in check.
Just a thought ??
how come Polaris ,brp ,cat ,yam don’t really get involved with
backing sledders with this kinda closure stuff
and I mean real backing with there own names in place , front and center.
you would think they would be the guyz hard up if we don’t buy rides
cuz there no where left to ride one day in the future
maybe chicken with there company names or don’t give a ****

You would think the local dealers would be the most vocal about it since it directly effects them but it doesn't deem that way. My good friends son is part owner in a local dealership and I don't think he even knows what the government is trying to do.

We were told years ago when the BCSF tried to get support from the manufacturers that the mountain sled market is such a small percentage of their sales they didn't feel the need to be involved.
Maybe with the growth in mountain riding those numbers might have changed enough for a different response if they are approached.
Don't expect much from BRP though as I don't see them opposing their cash cow. (The feds.)

Round up every existing Caribou and relocate the to Banff or Jasper or elk island park. If the don't survive there then Darwin is done with them.

Here is a quote from the article which makes me think we don't have a chance with this fight to keep it open. The Quad Squad and CrowSnow Riders put hours and hours of work and money into stewardship of the Crowsnest Pass area. Shannon Philips discounts it all in one sweeping statement that suggests there was no organized effort down there to maintain and improve the riding area for the last 40 years or more. She will probably call in her team of "scientists" again to support her agenda of making the Y2Y corridor just like she did down south. A big problem for users of the Bighorn (and most Albertans) is how to keep this latest land grab in the news.
Environment Minister Shannon Phillips said the Bighorn case is different from what happened in Castle.
"In the Bighorn, you've had local stewardship groups on the ground doing responsible recreation planning, and as much as they could on their own without government really helping them for a long time," she said. "You have an absolutely different landscape out there."

Great questions. If there is not mountain back country that should hurt sales even though the mountain slededers are small potatoes in overall sales.
That is what the studies were showing. In our existing parks the caribou population is dropping so makes total sense to close all areas then.
