SAY NO TO BANNING FIREWORKS
The Alberta Government is Banning Family Fireworks in Most of Alberta
The Alberta Government is in the process of banning fireworks in most of the province and extending the existing flawed fireworks permit process. Alberta is the only province with fireworks laws like this. Most people who shoot fireworks have no idea this is going on.
The Government of Alberta (Department of Municipal Affairs) is changing the Alberta Fire Code to ban fireworks in any county that has not implemented a permit process or already banned fireworks.
The changes are being included with many technical changes which makes it difficult to even know this is going on. No one from the Government attempted to talk to anyone involved with family fireworks - people who use fireworks, retailers or distributors.
To see the changes to fireworks laws go to this link and search for fireworks. You'll see many changes, including requiring every fireworks store to register with the government and requiring special labelling for fireworks sold in Alberta. And "2.2.3.4. Municipal Authorization of Low Hazard Fireworks" would ban fireworks in 2/3 of towns and municipalities as soon as the new law cames into force.
The facts about fireworks:
The fire damage from fireworks of all types caused less than 4/100 of 1% of the damage caused by between the ten years from 2001 through 2010.
The Alberta Government created a fireworks permit process in 2006 and there has been no decrease in the incidence of fires or fire damage caused by fireworks since then.
All family fireworks have been approved by the federal government for use by adults. They are limited in power and cannot contain harmful chemicals such as arsenic, boron, mercury or lead or any carcinogenic chemical. Proven dangerous fireworks like fire crackers and stick rockets have been banned for many years in Canada.
A family firework is not capable of blowing off a finger or limb - the most powerful shoots about as fast as a paintball gun.
Please help save family fireworks in Alberta!
