i see that the XP's recommend 91 octane, have you guys ran 87 ?..If you have or do use the 87 have you noticed a difference at all?

run the 91,,,, its a minimal differance in price and i am sure the odd tank of 87 wouldnt kill the sled but its meant to burn 91 octane,,,

I am sure someone will give a more in depth description but better fuel is always a good thing within reason...

guess no go tomorrow eh,,, damn snow

The stock XP is already a higher compression motor, don't run anything but 91 and if you can get it run the 93. I won't get into the ethanol, methanol blah blah arguement, as long as its fresh and you aren't letting it sit in your tank for a few days its good.

In Revy/sicamous you can get marked premium with for the price of regular too, been running it with no issues on many sleds.

I ran a tank of 87 and it sucked. I fowled a set of plugs and my sled just did not have that snap at WOT that it had with 91 octane. My assessment is that the knock sensor retarded the timing and lowered the performance. IMO don't do it, run premium gas.

Running lower grade fuel will cause faster carbon build up especially in the y-pipe and rave valves. the 800r is designed to run 91-94. You can run lower grade but performance and life will go down a bit so the extra expense is more or less cheap preventive maintenance

87 in a pinch only, otherwise as soon as the knock sensor "hears" a ping, you've gotten a detuned engine that's burning more gas and producing less HP, until you do a re-start again. Some guys will buy a couple of cans of AV gas (100 Octane) and blend the 87 to 91 or so.

I have a 2011 etec 800 that recommends 91. I'll be running that all the time but I have a question about when I may be in a pinch to find 91+. Would octane boost be worth putting in lower octane gas to try to bring the level up? any brand recommendations if so?

Octane 101:

91 is not "better" fuel than 87. Octane is simply a measure of a fuels ability to resist detonation. It has nothing to do with "better" or "cleaner". Higher octane fuel is actually more difficult to ignite and burns slower than lower octane fuel. That's how they get it to resist detonation. That's also why it's pointless to run 91 in a sled that only requires 87. You gain nothing and it actually hurts performance most of the time. If your sled requires 91 it's because the engine compression has been raised to the point where it may detonate 87 octane fuel.

Etec is 12.5 to 1 stock. Run 91 or higher. Most* Octane boost doesn't do anything. You'll go from 87octane to 87.1 octane

I'm going to be trying the Petcan 93 this year. My car runs highish boost and requires minimum 91 for the tune, which it only really likes Shell V Power 91 but I tired a tank of petcan 93 and it blew a boost hose off so it cant hurt to try in the sled right? :)

If they are calling for 91 octane, that has to be safe even at sea level though right? So 87 should be more than enough at 6000+ ft? I have always just ran premium but a person really should be fine with regular at elevation.

They get the extra 2 points of octane by adding ethanol to the gas. If 91 without ethanol is available then I would use it. Most sleds don't like ethanol.

way l understood it in doo forum was that the computer will pick up the knock and recognize the 87 and retard timeing to compensate..anyway was something along those lines..personaly will run recommended fuel but not afraid to use 87 in a pinch

Interesting theory. Makes sense to me. Wonder how we find out for sure?
