First off let me say that I really, really like the performance of my sled! That may be an understatement actually.

I am less than happy with BRP for a few reasons. Blowing belts, oil consumption and general lack of communication and explanations from BRP..

This topic is about oil consumption. Who else finds it to be a slap in the face that last spring they advertised these sleds to use 40% less oil than an 800 e-tec and then changed their minds once everyone paid for their sleds this fall?? I mean, how can a company the size of BRP get away with blatant false advertising on a mass scale like this? I have been using around 2L of oil per ride if not a bit more. I think they may actually be thirstier for oil than the 800's.

They at BRP are so sneaky, that this fall they took their videos off of youtube, re-worded them and re-uploaded them with the part about 40% less oil taken out.

How has other owners oil consumption been?

I will say again, I really like the sled, but dealing with BRP and the lies we were fed is enough to make me regret my purchase. Just my opinion.

Im sucking oil pretty damn good too. Still in break in though.

One thing is, mabe because they haven't had the 850 out that long, unlike the 800

That they have more oil for break in than a 800, just in case till they get a season on them and can alter the oil and maps more

I have been off break in for 2 rides now. I was hoping it would get better after break in but it isn't. I figure it is running near or around 30:1 which is crazy. I don't have exact ratios, but it is close to that and so are my friends sleds that are also off break in. Just pisses me off that they advertised 40% less consumption than the 800 and they are drinking this much.

You say you're burning 2+ litres per ride if you're estimating 30:1 then you're burning the tank and 2 jerry cans per ride (60L of gas)

That is correct.. I bring 25L of extra gas with me and last ride was deep and not much in the way of breaks. I burned approx. 50L or more that day. Like I said, I don't know exact ratios yet because I have been stock piling gas at home and filling up at home, so not sure exactly how many litres. My point is they are lucky to be getting 30:1 and I think it is actually in the 20's somewhere. I was being generous estimating 30:1.

I have no idea how much gas/oil per day of riding I am using. A buddy asked my yesterday how much gas/oil compared to the XM's. I couldn't answer because I fill up from a jerry can at home.

To be honest, I don't really care. Gas and oil are the least expensive part of sledding. With my riding, I have gas remaining at the end of the day and I can go 3 days on a fill up of oil. Everyday is very close to 50-60 km/day.

I've had 4 800 etecs and now my 850 and I would say everyone of them burns about 1.5-2L's on most days of riding. The way I look at it at least I know the oil system is working!

Take it from someone who came off a 800 pro if you are burning a little more oil than you think, you should be happy. With a little more oil consumption you for sure will have a motor that lasts longer. I was pretty sure my pro never used enough oil. I like the fact you can see the oil tank level come down in a day of good riding. I think the low oil consumption on the polaris was a good reason the motors never lasted. I went through two.

yup .. the oil consumption is atrocious ... long out of break in and every time I open my panel to check on my belt im amazed how much oil has been used.

took 20L extra gas on a deep day and burned most of it, almost had no oil left in my reservoir... already been through 6 jugs of oil and have about 800 km on the sled (at least I've used less belts and jugs of oil :cool: )

guess I gotta start packing extra oil next to my 6 spare belts ... but you know what, the sled still rips so hard I almost don't care :)

If this is true you sled is running rich. I am burning less than the 800 e-tech. Yes the oil was turned up, but only because you get one chance to release a sled, we can run it at the 40% with no problems however it was decided to turn it up for the start, especially when these sleds go out to the masses and guys do all sorts of crazy stuff. Just ask Aerocharger, they have to do a new bulletin every week as consumers always think they know more than brad! A bud update later may turn your oil consumption down, but if it was released at the 40% and then it was turned up, how would that instil your confidence. It is not meant to confuse or trick you it is done for the best purposes, that is the reason, you can come up with all sorts of imaginary things but that is why. There are many things that can happen so if you are buying more oil than you think is right, then have your dealer look at it, remember original poster says he does not really know and also remember if yo are in super deep pow, then you will burn gas at a way faster rate and oil as well. Would you rather it was wind blown ice and you were getting 200km to a tank. I prefer 60km to a tank of deep BC POW

I'll have the shop look at it next time I go there (as soon as BRP releases a fix for the clutching haha) ... it's noticably more than the 800 ... Our friend G.R. said he almost didn't make it back to the truck after a long day because he was out of oil.

I don't give a **** how much oil i use. My question is when is brp going to address the 2 major issues that are occurring?

Obviously I would rather ride deep pow, that is not what this is about.. What this is about is that this was blatant false advertising in the fact that I remember the advertisement video about the 850 that stated they will get 40% better oil economy than an 800. Is this the case? No, it is not.. I don't give a rats ass what certain people are going to do with their sleds who possibly void their warranty. I bought a sled being told that it would use 40% less oil than the previous model. Running at 30:1 or less is heavy on the oil, period. Don't even get me started on blowing belts.. Guys like me who alter their lives around the sport, who have to pay for everything on our own dime get a little pissed when being told one thing and then given another after spending our hard earned dough. If they needed to run them this heavy on oil, then BRP should have figured it out before releasing the sled to the public and saying one thing and doing another. I like the performance of the sled, but what's advertised needs to be followed through with.

Snows been deep. Sled to the bar. Etec's on trails are great on oil and use very little. In wide open throttle postion on a deep pow day I find my sleds the worst of the group on oil and gas.

Like Drew said Etecs are amazing on fuel
and oil in moderate throttle positions. However BRP has always told us they will use fuel and oil when you are on the bar all day long? It hasn't been a secret? I've told my customers that for years.

Yeah sounds a lot like the 18 MPG fuel mileage put of the 163.99999999 HP 800 ETEC. They will get that, on a trail out east, or on the trailer.

I can run my 800 ETEC out of fuel in 60 miles in the right conditions, usually drinks about a 1/3 tank of oil with that.

If she ain't fouling plugs, hammer down.

PowPirate, you do have a right to be pissed! I will admit that I have been a Polaris guy for years, but am riding a Cat right now. This last spring I had the opportunity to ride the 850 Summit X prototype in super deep snow conditions, and to be truthful it scared me away from buying one this year.

I reported on a different forum and possibly here also about running out of fuel in 17 miles! Yes, 17 miles! I was laughed at like I was crazy, but it was the truth. And yes it guzzled oil also. People said, "there is no possible way!" Well, I had no reason to lie about this, I am still thinking of buying one. But after hearing stories of all the problems (Blown belts, bent modules, broken coolant bottles, cranks starting to go, horrible oil consumption, bad fuel economy, etc) I am now leaning more towards an Axys. I know the Axys' that we are riding with do far better on gas and oil in deep snow than the 850's. Yes, I do make decent money but you should not have to spend $500 a weekend in gas, oil and belts to enjoy the sport. If you do, maybe this sport is dying for this very reason.

I know, Norona will give a excuse and defend all the problems for Doo, but I guess that is what he gets paid to do. I just think it is sad that we have to have excuses and not fixes for guys who spend $15,000! Shame on you Ski-Doo! Norona and Rasmussen give us pictures and videos about how to gut and tear apart your sled to keep from burning belts. What a joke! Ski-Doo should tell them to quit this S**T! Step up Doo and fix your problem! I know we are not doing the sport any good by not fixing these issues. Pull out all the sound deadoning materials so all the "Tree Huggers" can fight us and try to ban us in more riding areas because of being a sound nuisance or whatever else they want to dream up. This is happening in area already around Jackson Hole, Wyoming and I am sure coming soon to places near you.

I do own a BRP product, so don't think I am a basher! All manufacturers have issues, but this seems like the list is getting extremely long on problems with the "Game Changer"! I feel sorry for the guys who bought this first year sled. Their resales are going to tank!

I own two Evinrude E-Tec boat motors, a 200 hp and a 15 hp and they are light years better on both gas and oil than E-Tec sled motors. My boat weighs 3,500 lbs and I use about 70 gallons of fuel a year, not even one gallon of oil in a season! So what's up that supposedly the same technology is so efficient on the water pushing a boat that weighs 7 times more than a sled? I understand that the water won't have as much drag as the powder, but I will guarantee you that I would still burn tons less than a guy riding trail.

Just my two cents!

I can't take it anymore, I have read this thread and many others expecting to see some evidence of an actual problem and all I see so far is a couple guys bichn about using 2l of oil a day and blowing the odd belt, sorry boys but if your gonna ride these things they're gonna use oil, they're gonna get ****e mileage and when the snow's deep belts are gonna heat. I've owned many e-tecs and guess what, when you actually ride them instead of watching your buddies all day they use gas, oil and belts too. Like Norona said, if you think it's an issue take it to the dealer. I am getting so tired of a few guys having little issues with their 850's and turning s&m into an anti-BRP whine fest. Now talking about conspiracies to f over the customer on oil useage, seriously?? You paid 17g for a new toy and your upset because it uses the same amount of oil as your old one, What is wrong with you?? Makes me wonder if all you negative nellies came over to doo from poo after the dragon incident and have been looking for something else to piss and moan about ever since.
Let's get serious here boys, if there's an actual issue you are experiencing, use these forums to share and collect actual info like real adults.
