From a dealer prospective here.......we replaced only 3 engine assy last season of all the Axys sleds we serviced. All 3 were from rental companies. Two failures were caused by heat damage (many overheats to shut down..late season) and one was so destroyed we could not come up with a reason for failure (we are thinking snow ingestion from a bad seal on the air box). We are easily seeing sleds with 3000+ kms on them with minimal engine wear. Alot of things can affect the reason for failures....but most common issues we see with running issues/engine failures is fuel and temperature control. A cause should be able to be determined with parts being analyzed and data from Digital Wrench reports. If a person uses the recommended oil, fresh 91 fuel, warm the engine properly before moving sled, keep clutches and engine in good state of tune......these engine should easily top 5000kms without any major issues......we have seen many of them...and we have seen bad engines at 500 kms...not using OE oil...no trips to the dealer for seasonal service.....no clutch maintenance.....running questionable fuel....and start sled all geared up then back off tow unit and GO!!!!
I do realize not everyone likes to have maintenance performed at the dealer...and I get that...but I do feel a once a year trip to the dealer to at least have a Digital Wrench report done...clear any historic codes..and have the clutches inspected.........
if engine runs in 100% state of tune and clutches are in good shape...minimal heat will be generated around pto seal and engine will run with alot less resistance. (fighting a bad clutch or worn belt)
Things to keep an eye for on 16-18 Axys.....
-corrosion in wire harness connections (cause irratic running and electrical issues)
-engine isolator/torque stop wear (will decrease wot rpm)
-wear in VES brass bushing and seals
-stator harness rub on coolant hose (causing wire abrasion)
-irregular wear on inboard track drive windows/missing.torn lugs (track tension too loose and/or heat generated becaus of marginal snow/hard pack trails being run at high speeds)

I also own a 11 Summit with an 800R E-TEC....sled has 12,700 kms on it.....second engine has 7600 kms on it...first one replaced at 5000kms under warranty because of an internal coolant leak. I always warm sled till snow starts to melt on heat exchangers...use OE oil..and took to BRP Dealership at beginning of every season. I am a technician by trade....but this routine worked for me....and is working for my customers......
Just my 2 cents........... :) :)

All very good points on these sleds. I've relocated relays and have never had any problems caused by them (Have seen quite a few peoples sleds and the relay terminals are so green from corrosion it causes irregular running). Motor mounts have been changed and kept an eye on as yes they do wear out and cause low rpm/heat from misalignment. Coolant hose was caught just before it rubbed through on a pre trip check as well. One thing I noticed with mine is that the drivers were slightly misaligned and caused the track to rub on the inside of the tunnel on one side. I removed driveshaft and moved them over and it centered the track up as best as possible. Also clipped all the lugs and had absolutely no wear last season. The first track that was replaced on warranty was wore extremely bad and was also starting to split in over 30 places. Track tension is always adjusted exactly per the manual. VES is also the only oil ever run in the machine from new. Currently waiting for parts for the motor to be rebuilt but there is apparently a shortage in exhaust valves, hopefully will have the sled back before the new year. Will be going up for sale the second its home. Warranty until mid February 2019.

Finally got the Axys back running. Fresh motor with new crank, pistons, cylinder, head, exhaust valves, all new motor mounts and obviously all new bearings and seals throughout. Its for sale in the classified section and has been drove approx 0.5km. I bought a Sidewinder a month ago and also have my trusty M8 so will let this Axys go with all my Polaris accesories, Kurts geardown kit and clutching, Exit rear shock, and SLP can (about 4K retail for all). All stock components to go with (Factory Quickdrive with second brand new belt, muffler, shock) and a second set of running boards as well.
