800 engine mileage

Lost the PTO side today in my 16 Pro. This is the second time this engine has went down in 3500km. How many km are guys seeing before failure? Last year a crank bearing was the root cause. Not sure why this time yet. This was first ride this year, made it 10km. Coolant temps were normal, could feel things get tight and locked up, exact same thing as the first motor, first ride last year.

I thought that after 2015 they had that motor "fixed". How do they think the new ones are going to sell if you can't get more than 1500 km ?

I have over 5,000 km on my 16, mountain riding, hours and hours of WOW in deep snow. Never put ethonal in any of our sleds and always use the best oil possible, prep for winter storage with stabil.

Also, know lots n lots of mountain riders and very very few problems with the AXYS motors, same with the dealers I know.

So if you have reduced oiling on that side for some reason you would expect it would fail after the rebuild too. That said if it's your first ride of the season and you put the sled away wet it may have had moisture in the bearing that destroyed it over the summer. Sucks that these things are not so easy to fog.

Is this one going to be warranty ? please post up what the cause of this failure was. Many things can contribute Once it’s opened up, hopefully everything goes back together as it should. There is always the possibility something was missed or not not torqued properly.

I ride with a buddy who has a t3 163 and he rode with some guys who had AXYS 2.6 and they kicked his ass .I would like to look at a new one if i thought it would last.
Also, know lots n lots of mountain riders and very very few problems with the AXYS motors, same with the dealers I know.

Store it in my garage. Was fogged in late June as I rode till end of May. Fuel tank was full as was oil tank. I park and store my 2011 M8 right beside the Axys and that old girl just keeps on ticking. LOL.

This is a strange case. Maybe this engine was just one of those made Friday afternoon. I have not heard of many 800 mechanical issues from 2016 on. I have owned 3 of them and they have been pull and go year to year. I never fog and just start monthly in the off season.

PTO Crank seal was no good and the way the piston and cylinder looked it appeared to be a lean condition that has been going on for a longer period to time, not just something quick. Polaris is covering another rebuild but not looking further into why two engines in that many km. My dealer did have to show pics of engine bay including muffler, asked about what clutch spring and weights were in it and elevation rode. Also wanted a fuel sample to check for ethanol. No ethanol was found but leads me to the question should i run it in ethanol mode regardless? Or it will be for sale, new engine!!!!!!

The crank seal may have went bad due to the way it was installed last time when the crank was replaced.

One thing I always do first ride of the season is ensure the oil pump is working prior to moving the machine (obviously mine has a mechanical pump) but i pull on the lever with a coat hanger until the garage is completely smoked out to ensure everything is lubricated.

When you say lean condition was the piston crown melted?

Given the information you have provided I think you are lean on oil, whether it be a bad pump, or pinched line, or plugged port. Do you recall which bearing it was that seized the first time? That's where I would start.

I would make sure the dealer runs an injector sync since its there. There have been reports of the injectors being out of sync which in theory could lead to a lean condition on one side. While this used to be a larger issue on the old carb motors I would expect given the history of Polaris TPS troubles that something like that could get overlooked. Also not a direct reason for a lean condition but have them check the reeds, 16's were good but some 17's werent as good. And the E-VOS exhaust valve guillotine seals wear out and some have had sections break off in the transfer ports more so on the MY16 causing motor failures.

I got you, from my experience lack of oil shows up first on the intake side as the incoming fuel washes the oil off the intake side first. So maybe doesn't sound like that. I have melted a piston similar to this before on my turbo where a small portion of the top of the piston right at the exhaust port melted down through the rings lands and eventually burned a hole through the skirt right below the rings. But this was caused by detonation and a lean condition.

Anybody run one of Indy Specialties long rod motors in the Axys yet? Dans stuff and reputation is very good from what I’ve seen.

Curious how many miles did it go after the first rebuild? Did the crank seal not get installed properly or did they just throw parts in it the first time without fix the original problem?

Original motor went approx 1800 km. Second one about 1500. The first time got everything new except crankcase and head, this time is looking to be the same thing. Nothing has ever been looked into really further. Probably should just get rid of it.

I regreased the crank bearings on 7 different 800 ski doos over the summer. Everything from 09 to 2015. None had any grease at all.One had 3500 Kms and dust blew out as the grease went in. The 200 dollar tube of isoflex grease ran out and now I'm using AreoShell 22 for $17 a tube. We will see how it holds up. You can find it at airports.
