seems to me like the manufactuers could do a lot better.. my 98 k1500 with 5.7 vortec mostly stock cats are gone replaced with single hi flo, cat back exhaust, and im told an rv cam.. empty my best is 24.5 averaging 130, with my quad an gear (bout 800lbs) is still came out at 23mpg all thru bc.. but a truck thats 10yrs newer is way under that?? :confused: gotta love manufactuers bein in bed with oil companys lol

We'll see what the mileage is Sunday.Going to Quesnel to pick up and older 11' camper,that'll make the MPG drop like a stone. Looks like my truck is average for a 6l.

Im dragging another ancient thread out because I dont want to start a new one. I have a 2004 Chev 2500 Crew 4x4, 6.0L, 3.73gears and with only a marathon sled deck on it, sides retracted I am getting 12-13 MPG doing 105 km/h. The truck it stock other than 265/70R18 BFG all terrains. I was getting better mileage before and wondering if a dealer can diagnose poor engine efficiency. The truck has always had a bit of a miss at idle, I have had it since 92,000km and it has 225,000 now. Any ideas?

I took my 91 chevy ex cab 4x4 to fort sask last weekend. it is gas/propane. I hear it should be about 20% less fuel milage on propane and 20% less power but when propane is 50 cent a liter it is great. when I pull a big hill I just flip to gas and I stay at 130 plus. it cost me $70 in propane and less than $20 for gas to go over 800 kms. it sucked on the way back because propane went through the roof over night. gas is 95 and propne was a buck just out side calgary at morley. found propane in canmore for 70 cents a liter. if it goes over 80 cents it is cheaper to run gas. dont really know what Im getting for gas milage but it cost the same to drive my super charged 4 cylinder MR2 two weeks eailer. oh and my truck has over 300 000 km and could use a tune up lol. oh and that was with a sled in the back also lol. why cant these new trucks get good milage???????????

I run around 11-12MPG wether I am loaded or not. I have the 6.0L in my 2000 GMC 2500 with 4:11 gears and 190,000KM. It pulls pretty much anything I would like to pull but also likes its fuel. Hauling my heavy trailer with 3 quads and 1 in the box, also four of us in the cab gets the same milage as running with just me empty, although that is at 120 on the highway. I haven't hauled anything heavier yet but would like to just to see how she pulls.

With my 2007 Chev 6.0L the best I ever got was 21 empty on a straight non stop run from ft Mac to red deer, average is 17 highway 14 in the city and 12 with the cargo trailer. The worst I ever got was 8 mpg pulling a very large scissor lift it was approximately 13 000 lbs and it was a lot of high revs but what else do you expect with that load. The truck has 3.73 gears and lots of upgrades listed below

some ideas ( some may not have any effect on mpg though)
* plugged cats
* bad o2 sensors
* old spark plugs - could be causing the miss
* new coil packs ? - could also be causing the miss
*spark plug wires
* needs cold air intake
* thermostat
*thinner oil in the winter *
* run a couple of tanks with fuel injector cleaner ( buy quality stuff not cheapo )
* carboned up injectors
* just an idea but. with my Cummins driving around 100 -110 mark it gets worse milage empty than if i was doing a steady 115-120 but i also have bigger tires on the truck so its probably due to the rpms being lower due to the overall gearing change.
* lighter shoes...lol

I also hope your hand calculating those number too because going by the lie-o-meter overhead is usually false although some may be close but theres no way my Dodge gets 36 mpg haha:p :d:beer: i do wish it did though!:cool:

Sounds normal to me. My boss has had three different 6.0L trucks and they have all sucked (no pun intended), 2 of them got 9 mpg and the best (?) one got 12 mpg........running empty.

My '04 f350 empty was almost as good as my '06 cummins.........the 6.0l gas mileage was really bad until i downloaded a superchip economy mode program, and it improved to almost 20mpg if driven decently...... I would get a programmer asap for your truck too, as it would pay for itself within a year(depending on distance driven in a year)........

Sorry, i finally backread and he did say 6.0l vortec....was down on his 2nd post....

but speaking of which .. i can vouch for the 6liters powerstroke getting waaaaay better mpg with just the addition of a simple programmer + cold air intake combination.. with the programmer being set on a economy setting :beer:

i had a 2004 hemi r/c short box and i couldnt for the life of me get over 500km per tank.. i added a CAI and flashpac programmer and exhaust and i kinda think my mpg went down. but that probably because i was always on the loud pedal alot more so i could hear my exhaust lol.. i also had a throttle body space ( WASTE OF MONEY it did make a pretty lil 100 dollar whistle though :rant: )
by far the best thing i ever did to that hemi was a built transmission with a good torque converter
2004 hemi r/c s/b 4x4 , 20's with 35 x12.5 toyo m/t 3" lift
30000km - motor blew 2 pistons detonation (10g oops)
31000km - power steering rack went (warranty)
45000km - warped 3 rotors (napa)
59000km - blew a brake line (ugly mess) (warranty)
66000km - power train control module went ( has 3 sleds loaded up turned off the truck to load the last one went to start it and nothing)
78000km - transmisson went warranty
83000km - transmission went again (warranty)
100000km - transmisson went again ( denied warranty ) 3.5 grand for a new "built one"
129980 km - so called "built tranmission" blew up (20 KMS LEFT ON WARRANTY THANK GOD)
129980 KM- NEW BUILT TRANMISSON + NEW POWER CONTROL MODULE INSTALLED
129981KM - traded in for a 2006 cummins --- LOVING EVERY MINUTE OF IT!

NO IT AINT GOT A HEMI! THANK GOD! talk about a lemon!!!

this was her favorite hang out spot! look closely you can see the transmission lines hanging down haha loved the look of the truck hated the reliablity..

I get 13 mpg with my 06 6L. Doesn't seem to matter how I drive it. On a side note, does anyone else have a engine "whine" at low rpm kinnda like the power steering pump maybe? I can't figure it out. Thought it was maybe the charging system but that all checked out. Had a bad idler wheel on the AC belt, changed it, noise still there. Could it be the fan?? Doesn't really sound like the power steering pump but I flushed the fluid anyway, noise still there. truck has 105,000 km on it now.

I have never touched the coil packs, they are probably still stock ones. Wires, plugs, air filter, good oil and changing to a better oil filter after reading another thread on here. Ran a couple things of injector cleaner through it, and used seafoam this summer on it. The 10ply BFG All Terrains arent lite but are gonna stay on there. I dont know if cold air intakes on gassers make a difference but hey are over $300 so leaning towards not getting one.

When moving or sitting still? If it's happening when moving(still in 1st gear) then it's the output shaft of the trans. Too much end-play? Pretty sure there was a bulletin on it.

It does it when sitting still also. Its kind of like a belt whine. I'm thinking its iether the clutch fan or the power steering pump. I'm positve its not the output shaft. Thanks for your feed back. :beer:
