They tried and failed. Realized they were making enough money in spare parts, their 2 stroke engine only last a few thousand KMs before replacement.

Im pretty happy with the ol 4 stroke; 12,000kms, 250hp, no much heavier then a turbo 2 stroke (lighter if its a Lynx).

4s are a pretty cool and fun trail sled, and doo pulled the 4s summit during snow check. I think C3 or powderlites, in BC managed to get one of the prototypes.

Ever since textron took over.
All joking and pot stirring aside. That 800 cat engine has held its own, a very peppy engine. The stock cats I have ridden were pretty good. Niners sled is very impressive. I am interested to see what this new engine will bring to cats barn, a long over due upgrade with the chassis.

I’d love for the kingcat to come back with the sidewinder engine in the new platform

Well if the rumours are true that the the 800 ctec drops into the new chassis I can't see why the Sidewinder engine wont fit. I have my eyes out for some selling a wrecked or blown up 600 to experiment with. But Im going to try and get my Sidewinder engine into the new chassis. Then get an 858 for the wife, at least what ill tell her.

I really wish they would release these with a twin rail.

We don't ride enough mountains anymore for the alpha rail, we do lots of trails and cut lines, a twin rail works better for us.

We're due to replace at least 1 sled in the next couple years.

Talked to my Cat guy today and the rep was asking how many 858 he could sell next year. He said if it’s under $21000 he could sell 40. If it’s $24000 he would sell 10. Hopefully cat doesn’t over estimate how desperate the cat faithful is for a new sled and price themselves out of the game.
You mean base price? I just went thru and specced as equivalent machines as I could for AC, Poo and Doo as close to equivalent equipment as I could and they all came out to just under 24,000. AC was current year Alpha 800 obviously but I also did a 600 Catalyst and it was about 3000 less than the Alpha and that seems to be about the premium for the bigger engine if you do yhe equivalent on the POO with the 850 vs 650.

Base on the 165 Alpha was just under 21,000, shorter track a smidge less, so of they manage to hold the price I guess he’ll get his wish. Good chance your not going to get much of a discount from the dealer either.

Easy enough to twin rail yourself, but I get what you are saying. They should at least have the option for the consumer, or offer a Hardcore edition again with the twin rail.

12,000kms, that's amazing for a mountain sled, I got 8,000kms on mine and just changed the spark plugs for this season for the first time ever.
Same deal 250+hp and over 200ft of torque, runs like day one. And ya within 45/50lbs of a G5 turbo 175.

for the price we pay for these darn "toys" today, I don't want to have to be throwing extra coin at it.
I gave my feedback to some of the AC guys when they were at the show in Edmonton, we'll see what's in the box as time goes on.

I agree. Coming from an Alpha, and then a Doo with T-Motion, I am loving the feel of the gen 5 Doo without T-Motion and flex edge.

I bet if they release a twin rail it would be 50/50 twin vs Alpha sales if not higher for the twin.

I to have a good donor for a project like that. It’s supposedly built to handle some big boost
