So just looking at the 2018 summit vs freeride right now. With the freeride available with the narrower ski stance this peaked my interest until I seen that it's 24 lbs heavier. I'd rather just add rail bracing and a grip and rip kit to a summit and still be at least 20 lbs lighter. And for me, 20+ pounds for more adjustable suspension isn't worth it. I'd rather put better suspension on a summit to save the weight. It will cost a bit more that way yes, but saving weight is important. Where is the rest of the added weight in the freeride? Why choose freeride over summit after considering the points I just mentioned?

Pro40's are way heavier than the stock junk KYB's as you will find with any good aftermarket shock. Probably beefed up the glass bulkhead too

Well for one the freeride still comes with a wider front end:

RAS 3 FRONT SUSPENSION

PRECISION
FRONT END
Similar geometry and steering to the RAS 3 mountain front end for capability and light steering feel on- and off-trail. Optimized for crossover usage, two ski stance positions dial in handling: 40.1 in. (102 cm) or 38.4 in. (97.5 cm).

just so you know KYB Pro 36R = 36mm shock body, NOT 36inch wide front end. This seems to confuse people.

probably why they didnt use a 40mm shock body this year, cause most people wont know the difference any way....lol

There are both options for the 154" narrow 35.7-37.4 or the wide 38.4-40.2 width
Yes the shocks are heavy, we can assume it has one of the grip n rip style braces as well as rail braces maybe some board/tunnel stiffeners but 24 lbs seems like a lot

There is a 154" s-38 which is the wide option there is also the 154/165 which is the narrow 36" front end. I also originally thought the 36r was the shock body size but after looking at specs I was pleased to see they put a summit width front end on the longer freeride.

plus my dealer binder, if you want 3" it's with a 36" front end both 165, 154. or the 154 2.5 with 40" front end. the most intriguing of any of these is the 146 for me any how. i'm partial to the wide front end and wide running boards. and they seem to have lost that in premium summit model.

The KYB 36 is 100% a 36mm shock body.(i looked into it) New shock.

But that is cool they come with the narrow front end, if you want that. I like the wider front end personally.

I still cant find the narrow front end though on the site though. Must be just me haha

"The longer Freeride models ride a little stiffer in the mountains, so sidehills and quick line changes are a little tougher because you're not overcoming the uphill shock as easily as the Summits, but if that's a compromise you're willing to make for better bump absorption, this is your sled."

why would the freeride ride stiffer in the mountains than the summit? And what do they mean by overcoming uphill shock? So if I'm not doing drops and doing big jumps with this sled then go summit x then?

it's probably referencing down hill u turns. the uphill shock would be the inside shock depending on what way you turn. a good set of dual rate spring help alot with this. i've got a z-bro's dual rate set up on the front of my freeride and they made a bigger difference than i expected. going from stiffer brp option to the z bro's. helped alot with how the front end handled and initiated turns in the snow.

i think brp has a screw up on the go with the build your machine. i just priced a 154 s-38 package freeride, with a 165 3" for the low price of 18,049 before freight and pdi. sweet jesus i would like one but that would be alot more than i would be wiling to pay.

A good portion of the weight difference is the SHOT starting system (-20 lbs.) on the summits but not on free rides I believe.

Isn't the extra weight on the Freeride the Doo race bracing? And why would the only offer it in white?

The extra bracing and I think the shocks weigh more as well. The only white option does seem a little strange to me also, unless they just assume everyone is going to wrap it

Freeride is same as summit, except for small rail bracing and shocks, that is 25 pounds, piggy backs weight a lot, it comes in one color as a spring only order only, and you can get shot on any summit and summit freeride.
