My buddy is selling his team KTM and I want a snowbike... I also want a supermoto to ride in the summer. Can this bikes stator support signals and lights? Is it even possible to road legal it?

Getting tougher to get plates for sure. Buddy of mine sneaked a WR450 in a couple years ago but another guy we ride with was denied on the same bike. Sticky supermoto tires and lack of a cush hub is asking for trouble with a dirt bike transmission IMO. I only ever run knobs on my WR...
Trailtech makes a higher output stator if needed.

The VIN from the SX should show up in the registry system as "off-highway" category and be very difficult to get approved for street use. Starting with a street-legal VIN I suspect you'll have better luck, might have to get it inspected and "salvage" status though. I don't think anyone including Alberta registry staff understand how the system works, however it does employ a lot of people and generate lots of revenue for the government.

Just buy an used EXC? I think swapping back and forth especially fork calibrations would get old. Can’t have too many motorcycles

I want the weight of the SXF and power. I think the EXC would be just Ok as a snowbike? I like some jam... 63hp in the SXF at10.500 or something like that?

The biggest driver is I think I can get a good deal on the SXF and have you seen a 2016 Team bike? They're titties! Big titties!

Very difficult to street legal anything that is titled as Off Highway, been there and was unsuccessful.

As for a supermoto setup I built one for the track a few years ago and it was an absolute rocket. My friends and I used to do alot of riding on tracks both sides of the border and had bikes that were sport bike killers on a tight track, they would always outrun you on a straight but the corner speed a supermoto can hold is ridiculous.

No problem with using a non-cush drive wheel at all in fact i didn't know anyone that had a cush drive other than guys running bikes like the 701 or 690's that may have come with one stock.

A few of the must haves (in my experience):

-Tubeless wheels, preferably Marchesini forged. Massive improvement over tubed spoke.
-5" rear wheel minimum to get a better profile on the tire
-Very soft tires. We ran supermoto specific slicks but for street use you would need to go with a sport bike type tire likely. Go very soft or the sidewall will collapse and rebound when cornering hard.
-Big front rotor, 300 or 310mm minimum with a supermoto specific front brake caliper and master cylinder. The stock caliper will boil the fluid very quickly when dealing with the stopping power needed and has a terrible feel.
-Quiet exhaust, they get really annoying to ride with a loud exhaust.
-Sliders on the pegs and on both axles
-Front suspension work, i ran a supercross setup on mine to get it stiff enough. That setup would likely work for a snowbike as well.
-Hand guards with full wrap around
-Small front fender, just looks better
-Any oil or fuel vent run to the airbox or to a dedicated catch box with a K&N filter on the crankcase vent
-Gearing will be huge. Mine was geared to the moon and sometimes that still wasn't enough. With a close ratio transmission you would need all you can get.

This is a thread i'm following. My son sold his little dirt bike and bought a scooter. The plan is to ride the scooter till he's 16 then upgrade to a street legal bike he can take off road. It seems to be an easier move making something street legal to off road no? He's not doing tracks, racing or mud. Just his own ride he can putt around the campsites with and come along on some of the easiler rides we go on.

Much easier to start street legal and build out for mild off road use for sure. I ran a 450SXF for a supermoto and by the time it was ready to race it was really not useable off-road. Building for the street is a little different mind you but still a lot of the same items would be used to have something that will handle good on the street.

A good start is a KTM EXC model or Husky S model as they are street legal and still make good power once you tune them a bit so they aren’t running for emissions but for performance.

A low cost start would be a DRZ or XR, they don’t do anything really good but just everything okay which is good for a start.

But what would make a good snowbike and road legal?

If you want a bike to "do it all" there will always be a compromise somewhere. I recently got a 500 EXC-f (street legal from the factory) to do some Dual sporting and single track riding.

I did buy a brand new 16' Husky TE300 and after already registering it, I went into the registry office after a year and for $22.50 they changed the registration over to motorcycle for me no questions asked..... never even looked at the bike. Its in our favor that our registry offices are not govt. operated. I never did put lights on it, just wanted to see if it was possible and obviously a 2T would be terrible on the road

If only the Husky FS-450 was street legal then it would very likely be the best of both worlds for street riding and snowbike.

So I live 7km from work and its 80km/h 90% of the drive... I just hate starting the diesel up for such a short drive. Should get my lazy ass on the mountain bike more... I bought a hard tail 29er the other year and its dusty lol

I actually just came back from the registry this afternoon. I got my XR400 changed from "off highway" status to "motorcycle" status.
I told the lady I have the bike converted for road duty, paid new registration and off I went.

This is not the first time I heard someone going in an asking for the status to be changed with the bike not seen.

hmm this seems promising. I rarely see police on my route and I'm sure I could rig some LED undertails up...
