Last years etecs with my clutching PLUS a primary shim kit with 163 x 2.5 tracks all ran 21/45 gearing. No pipe,no reeds just a can. Personally i think your waisting your money by installing a 3".

For climbing performance on a stock sled absolutely. It weighs to much and doesn't climb much if any better. Just more fun when moving slow through te trees and whatnot

i am running the 23/49 in mine, 3" track, 2mm oversize rollers and pin weight. i can vouch that the gearing works in all conditions.

I'm trying some of Deano670 tricks to real soon.I think 19-51 with a 40 degree helixs is very Low/slow combo need to speed things up to load the motor at least gear to 21-51 with stock 163 track.

But is that with 7 tooth drivers?

yes i am running 7th driver. 7th or not, as thegeneral brought up, it is only 8%.... that is not alot by anymeans.

23/49 (2.13) to 21/51 (2.42) is at 14% reduction. Add the 7th reduction on top of that it is 22%. seems like alot.

2.4 to 2.5 is where you would weant to be with a 8 or 9th driver... in my opinion.

By the way, this is my own setup not Deano's.... dont want anyone getting confused or false info.

Yeah I realize that.

That difference is a lot though. That is how you can run that gearing.

Try and run anything taller than 2.25 with the 7 tooth taken into consideration and your clutching won't maintain the track speed.

You would have to run a 25 to get the same ratios he is talking about.

So since i'm going up to a 163 from a 154 on my 09, whats the ideal setup?

I believe everyone is in agreement that the stock gearing on the New 163's is too low.

Personally I would swap out the top gear to a 20 or 21 which would be the cheapest and easiest solution. Then adjust your clutching from there.

but going to a 21T with a 2.5 track load up the motor too much? How does the 21T on the longer pulls? Does the motor start to loose some torque with the 2.5 track?

Well to me it seems like the guys that has went up in gearing also have changed out track, avids and so on, so it doesn't seem like anyone has 20/21 top gear and is all stock everywhere else..hmmmmmmmm Great Post

We're all running the 7 tooth avids with the 3" CE's. two of them with APP's clutching. 1 with 20/51 and 1 with 21/51
And I've got stock clutching with 20/51
Today will see if it pulls better than stock. Last trip in 2 feet of powder on a straight up climb it would hold 67 kph track speed

I tried a 20 top gear today just riding around home. In the little snow I found in the trees it seemed to like it. The track speed plained er out a little quicker imo. Gonna try a 21 tomorrow just to see how it feels too.

BRP keep gearing down to bandaid their inefficient clutch system, i think.. i like the 2.15/ 2.25 ratio and for boosted sleds i like 2.05 ish thats geared very low already..the sled is in way to low of a gear when cruising the trail to get anywhere!! reving too high i found.

The XM runs 19/52 ( 2.74 ) gearing? Poo runs 20/42 ( 2.1 ) maybe it's true that the Poo clutch squeezes the belt harder to be able to run way higher stock gearing.
