A coworker's engine locked up and the dealer diagnosed it as a bad headgasket (hydro-locked). It is out of warranty and they are quoting $10k for the repair! Anyone have experience with this? It's in Edmonton.

No symptoms prior? Must of been blowing white smoke. They typically don’t just let go. $10 seems pretty practical. New sleeves, pistons and rings. Likely machining work also.

Give Ric(Summitric) a call at Sherwood Park Service -- Auto Select 780-464-6000 he'll give you an idea if its realistic or not. May even be willing to take on the job.

He was getting low coolant warnings but figured it was the lower rad hose like had happened before. Every time he shut the engine off the degas bottle was full. $10k is for just doing the headgasket, nothing else. 48hrs + parts.

Well he’s getting the run around. You can get a fire ringed head machined for under $3000. Better then stock and good for double the stock boost pressure.

Yikes! I have had coolant low issues ever since I bought my truck. ...might have to get that double and triple checked.

$10K is probably pretty common at a regular shop. I did my 04 a few years back and was quoted $6K by quite a few shops, found a backyard guy to do it for $3K. A lot of hours required as everything on the top of the engine needs to be taken off.

The boss said just get it done so it stayed at the stealer. They said some BS about dropping the motor and trans out the bottom to work on it. Probably just a service writer regurgitating something they heard once. Taking the cab off I would believe but I think that's a Ford thing. I tried to ring Rick a few times but it seems he's semi retired.
