I had the quads in sled trailer at hunt camp and went to move them the other day. Wife's battery was dead (on her quad too) tried the recoil and it just free wheeled. So I pushed it out of trailer and then I noticed oil on floor.

It seems to be coming out from behind where the recoil is bolted on. Looks like recoil and then another piece bolted on to engine.

Is this possibly a rear engine seal leaking and if so is it contained in the adapter that is bolted on?

Any help would be appreciated. Quad has 2000 km on it. Maybe seal just dried out is what I'm thinking.

I have an older 450, think mud getting in the recoil rope hole could cause havoc. I used to silicone mine before it became a plow only unit and was out in the mud.

Think I will start by taking recoil off. Just wasn't sure if there was an engine seal behind it that may be causing my leak

Looks mostly like mud and cow chit.

Id wash it, check the oil. And if its not leaking out real fast i wouldnt worry too much about it.

That's oil and dirt after a couple blasts of brake clean. There was fresh clean oil dripping off 1 bolt head before

So I got the recoil off. Tried to impact this bolt off but no go. Now I don't have a $1000 snap on impact but hoping I'm headed down the right path. Was thinking maybe an external seal behind it that can be changed?

Talked with Honda. Bolt was normal thread. Got it out with better impact. Turns out there is a seal behind the recoil gear. Really looks like that's where the oil came from.

Got parts today. Going to get it back together tmrw hopefully.

On honda's like yours we always used silicone around the pull handle and around the cover so no dirt and water gets in
Because they love to fill with dirt and water!!! LOL
