Sounds like a faulty crankshaft position sensor to me. If smoke is puffing out your intake then the fuel charge is igniting while the intake valves are open, meaning the timing is off. I would check the spark again and take note of the engine position when you get the spark. It should spark when the engine is near top dead center (piston at top, all valves closed).

I think if it gets fixed I'm selling it, GW cycle say now it will only cost $1847. to fix it. The journal where the cam sits is pooched they showed me, even with the cam cap not on it is very hard to turn the cam, so the short of it is a new head. So I let them know how I felt politely and with a few chosen words they lowered the price to $1274. but this dosen't mean it wont need a oil pump. They can't check the presure until the head is in and running. I feel like I've been bent over again, I need a drink

Sorry ,but the oil pump thing is BS.If they re-build an engine and start it up dry, to check for oil pressure..........they are on crack!!!!!! Any engine can be primed PRIOR to starting!

but it does need the head on, right the only thing I haven't repaired is the bottom end and tranny, time to get rid of it
