I know for sure nails and bolts would dish out or even sheer with all that movement. So your down to glue, and i already mentioned how that stands. Going over 3 times the height the building code will allow. Hell even some newer houses are having troubles at 1 and 2 stories with improper window installations, most people do not even know their houses are leaking and already rotting.

I'm in the architecture field and attended a presentation that used this building as a case study for a small portion of it. The current code allows buildings to be constructed of wood up to 6 storeys but this was given an exemption by some portion of the government. Its actually a composite wood structure which includes steel, concrete and timber. Before making a judgement on it I would research it a bit, it is a very interesting and unique project IMO.

This is probably one of the most regulated buildings in Western Canada... its most likely better built than 95% of the stuff out there. Comparing it to current wood construction following the NBC is ignorant

I imagine this isn't set and forget either, they'll be watching this closely for a while before rules are changed. But if we never try anything we'll never know if something is better ya know. That's all this is.

If i had a second chance at life, no way i would go into carpentry again. You work like a dog and no one respects a carpenter as a trades person anyway. I was crippled with a new and improved roofing material .. latest and greatest my azz. It nearly broke every bone in my body when I went through that crap. I have had to deal with more than my share of Engineering F_ ups over a 40 year span of building.

Agreed, most engineers don't know their head from their a$$. Just because they can draw it up in their office doesn't mean it will actually work. Seen so many disasters as a result of retarded engineers.

I see no problem with trying certain things, but this is incredibly extreme. If it was a 8-10 story it wouldn't be so bad. 18 stories is a tall building. And what can you do once the buildings finished? About the only way to fix supports on the lower portion is with matches.

Have many of the laminated beams 8n NY house and the shop, suppose to be more fire resistant than standard timber frame and at least 10x stronger. I think from a renewable stand point these are the way of the future. California has building codes that require these types of laminate products. Mike Holmes did a whole series on it. There is plans for a 90 story building in Asia some place.

I started laughing when you said Mike Holmes. Anyone who is in the construction industry knows he is a complete joke and knows nothing, he's just a tv actor.

I’m looking at it like this, when the big one hits it will just float away like an ark. Condos at sea.

Totally agree he is a TV actor. However I don't feel home depot would lend their name to him if he was a fraud.

Did a barn build with laminate beams last summer and plan to do my next shop with them

It’s got two massive concrete elevator/stairwell shafts. That should stiffin her up in the wind and provide fire egress. The shafts look over sized for a building that is only 18 stories. I like the idea of using our own western Canadian materials. We need every job we can get right now.
As a carpenter and an indoor environmental specialist I’m not in total agreement with this plan.

My concern would be with shrinkage using wood. I’ve seen and dealt with the results of concrete and wood in the same building. The decks on this particular building ended up tilted towards the interior with the expected water problems as a result. Can’t imagine 18 stories of shrinkage without every detail being managed by an expert for flashings, expansion and contraction considerations. It all works out nicely on the blueprint and computer generated calculations but reality is a far cry from what the computer model says.

In his list of references the newest was 13 years old and much was 30-40 years old. Safe to say technology has progressed since then and produces a higher quality product.

looks more like project housing to me.

geto at sea maybe? lmao

It's university housing so like a housing project but with really expensive rent.

This was written in 2012, where as the glues "may" have improved the wood fiber has gotten worse.
