I was just wondering if you really need to put an extension on the tunnel from a 154 to a 163? Can you just run no flap?

Well the snow flap will help direct snow to the exchanger , depending on what year your tobangen is but I am sure you guessed that already

And the extra few paddles on the track might not be a difference in powder but on the trail up to the pow it could be a difference in cooling

I bought a 2011 m8 and I was going to cut the flap shorter and was told it would affect my cooling so I wouldn't.

I seen a guy do this and when he hit big bumps the track would grab the tunnel where the mud flap bolts on and bend that all to sh!t! And I think it looks unfinished.

yup exactly. you will bend up your tunnel, and possible lose lugs when the track bottoms out. you will also have cooling issues. and its also dangerous if you are ejected off the back.

Seen it done 162-174 with no extension on some cats. They just tie the flap up a bit so it doesn't get sucked into the track.

It would be best to install a extension and relocate the rear cooler. Extensions / extension kits are readily available for most models of sleds.

Can't relocate the cooler on an xp. Can only have it extended. But tunnel extensions aer cheap get one.

A little less crucial of a point but with the rear bumper further forward than the rear of the track it will always land on your toes when you set it down. Not a big deal...but a pain in the ass in my experience.

Speaking of bumpers the sled will also come right Over backwards much easier without the extension

Well there are quite a few valid points, i have a 2010 xp that i stretched from 154 -163" 3 inch and i have the original flap on that i cut down a bit. i also have an ez ryde skid which i believe lifts the rear end a little higher than stock. The reason i did not do a extension because the summer 2010 i put a full Vanamburg bumber, snow eliminator wrap on my 154 then in summer 2011 when i wanted to stretch it i talked to Mike at Van to see if i could just cut the bumber portion off and have him hake me a new tail section that would over lap the one i put on the year before but strength was an issue so he said id have to order a complete new wrap. I ran this all last year and haven't had any issues on cooling or flipping but i do run scratchers on hard pack trail.
On another note regarding Van Amburg in 2010 we ordered a few different tunnels, extensions etc and the service and quality was exceptional, last year we ordered 4 bumper extensions and two coolers, one cooler came in 4 inches to long and when we had it cut down the two aluminum disc the cut out to weld the bungs on to mount your hoses to were sitting in the cooler plus the bung pipes were sitting way to deep in the cooler restricting flow, now in this case mike said take it to a local shop here and have them shorten it and send him the bill but when the bill went in the guy had a bit of a fight to get paid for it, the bill was from a welding shop in fort mac . 2 other extensions the welds had to be disc sanded before goring to powder coat, one of the extension orders my buddy was dicked around for 2 months before he got it, the other cooler ended up leaking on the seam which i believe simmit69 posted that complete ordeal.
My opinion on Van Amburg from experience 2010 and previous absolutely beautiful work and service, 2011 i personally would not buy a custom product unless mike guarenteed me he was doing the fab and welding personally. I only posted this because i have seen this with my own eyes, do u research before u buy. I know maxwel has had great success with them and so have i except last year was absolutely disgusting on more than one occasion.
