I have a 13 Freeride with about 3,400 km on it so far. When should I be thinking of doing the top end? A little background, my 13 year old (Novice rider) son rides it mostly around home but it does see 5-7 days in the mountains. I ride a 14 Summit but still has only 2,000 km on it but that's 98% mountain and high RPM/Altitude. My last couple of sleds were the PTEK and the HO. I think the PTEK had 3,200 and I'm told is still going strong but the HO blew the bottom end at 3,500 km.
I've been told the ETEC can last much longer. What does the intelligent S&M population think?

I think you’ll get guideline advise but I don’t think you’ll get anything accurate. That’s a crap shoot really, always better to do it before you need to, Cheeper and will be “planned repairs”.

It’s more piece of mind when to do it. I got a ptek that when over 12,000kms before it needed a top end and I’ve seen some that didn’t even make 2000. Id do a compression and engine fitness test also check your crank runout first.

It's more than likely ok especially with the relatively easy usage but check crank runout and compression. Crank runout tells more than compression on the etec. Even with collapsed skirts the compression is generally still in spec. Etec is generally due for a top end after 4-5k km of heavy mountain riding.

4-5K sound great. I have the highest milage of all my friends. Most guys turn them over after 2K. Not a bad idea.
Thanks

I rode with a guy this past spring up at Grizzly Lodge that had just dropped a new engine in his 11 Freeride. He had over 11K on his ETEC and blew the bottom end. He said in that time he only replaced the starter and rebuilt the clutch.
impressive.
