Yep, if the ring gap was compressed shut, the rod bearing is possibly toast. Very common problem on the HO's, seen 3 in my garage like that, they were not bullet proof in this regard.

Rotate it a little back and forth, if the crank moves and the piston doesn't, you've got a bad rod bearing. If its a bad rod bearing and it hit the lower case, you will need a shortblock. Could have also been pieces of the crank bearings in which case you will still be cheaper to do shortblock by the time you factor in crank price.

The price point on the shortblock is why most people replace it, you need to make sure the bottom is in good shape, so you have to split the cases anyway now. Measure the crank run out before you split the cases and it might tell you what happened. By the time you do rings, pistons, hone, gaskets, etc, you are going to have spent $1,000 anyway, and then you are wondering about the bottom end. Most people replace the shortblock and then they know they are good for another 2500 kms usually on the whole motor, not worrying about the extra miles on the bottom end when they just did the top end. Ski Doo's track record with cranks isn't the best.

I think it is bottom end bearings, either con rod or crank. seen a few look like that. pieces come up from the bottom and make a mess of the piston etc...

If you only get 2500km out of a shortblock you must have installed it backwards

Yep, install them backwards all the time......these guys must have installed them sideways.....

Maybe you want to talk to my buddy who just replaced his with 1600 miles on his 06, blown crank.

Here's one that made it 1300 miles.....https://www.snowandmud.com/forum/f461/07-800r-mag-pistion-low-compresion-47871.html

or 2 cranks in 2000 miles...
https://www.snowandmud.com/forum/f460/second-08-crank-shaft-falure-46713.html

and that was just a short search ..... Sorry if its the truth, anything over 2500-3000 kms on a Doo 800 and you are in crank failure territory. Some are lasting to that point and well past, but lots aren't.....

maybe they were using polaris engines in some of them :d:beer:
sure sounds like the same old story. i dont think it matters on the 2 strokers who you go to today. they are running too much power out of them 2 make them dependable anymore. jmo.

fawk your buddies are hard on chit!

yes plenty of doo cranks fail early. but those are the only ones you hear about. going on 6500km on my 2010 now. just regreased the pto end last week. im praying but im plenty happy with that life.

2008,2007 skidoo failures....ya thats expected.

2004-2006 were some very good engines. yep some still failed.

my guess on this one is like what everyone else said...shrapnel from either rod bearing or possibly lost a chunk of the skirt that you cant see yet.

and any new shortblock if properly installed should last over 2500km. yes there were some bad engines in 2007 2008 but if replaced with a shortblock you should be laughing until 5000km just my experience. i dont make this stuff up for fun. well maybe.

the top of my pto side on my 1000 looked kinda the same, was a rod failure, because someone tried to get away with just a top end job and it didnt work, wasnt me i boughtit with the blown engine. piston skirts still looked like new when i ripped it apart, i even kept the one piston as it is still in as new condition, and if i had to, in an emergency i could probably even clean up the one from the failed side and reuse it. the rings still move freely on it and no scuffs on the side. the topend probably only had a few hrs on it when it blew imo.

crappy part about this is you dont get a cylinder head with the shortblock :(

Agree there - for the price of a new head I would just have someone like Kelsey machine it out and run some different domes.

ya kelsey makes a stock cheater head. not sure what thats worth.

ive found a couple used ones around for 200$

but be CAREFULL

MXZ and SUMMIT have a different compression ratio and the heads are different regardless if its the same HO motor. so if you pickup a used head it must be from a summit HO.

LOL no guts no glory dude! My buddy's play hard for sure. I realize there are lots out there still working good, your's and Teeroy's come to mind right away. It seems like if they make it, they are good for a long time, the ones that go, tend to go around the 2500 km to 3000 km mark though.

Chitty, but thanks.....
For the input, it kinda took the wind outta my sail's for taking her apart now :(

So..... if what all y'all are saying is true about the crank. I should be looking at spending 3G's to have it ready for this fall.

Here's another question Re: short blocks..... is there any way to tell the year of the S/B when buying it, or would that even matter???

Good call all   :d

The connecting rod bearing(PTO side) has over 1" of play in it side to side

I tried to take 2 pics from the same position, but if you go by the gasket.
I'm sure you'll see the space difference.

thats too bad even that piston looks perfect.

i gotta ask was the sled pulling proper rpm 8000-8200 no more?

i took out that same bearing on my old 600 back in the day from throwing it over 8800rpm on nitrous.

I am a tach watcher at WOT.

I was barely pulling 8000, but it was working good.

Untill................... waaaaa ....waaa. waa.

well that looks like its gonna cost some money.

I'm thinking so.... or maybe look at getting another one, and having a great parts machine.
