Layering is the best way. But the type of fabric the base layer is made is the most important. I have switched to Merino wool base layers and socks. Everyone sweats and the other base layers wick the sweat away but doesn't absorb it. I actually used to have ice on the inside of my klim boots...

Closing of the road from the staging area north is great for both summer and winter. We weren't allowed to quad on it during the summer (at least not to be seen by forestry). It made it somewhat difficult to get to some of the trail legally. I wonder how Devon is going to get to their stations...
The more the merrier. I see your SinLaw (to be) could still be a newbie...just wouldn't be a brand-newbie. I would see taking someone who flat-land rides to the mountains for their first ride there as being a newbie...to new kind of riding.
