Peace Valley Snow Riders - Announcement
Christmas Comes Early for Peace River Area Snowmobile Club
The Peace Valley Snow Riders, which was formed in late 2009, has received an early Christmas
gift from Alberta Sustainable Resource Development (SRD) in the form of approval for their first
formal trail in the area. Work on identifying the potential route and consulting stakeholders for
the Leddy Lake Trail has spanned the last year and involved many club members and
volunteers. The 24 miles of trail, which is in the County of Northern Lights, will be 10 to 15 feet
wide and run north from the Leddy Lake Recreation Area, operated by the Weberville
Community Club, to Driftwood Lake (also known as Reese’s Lake) in the Deadwood area. The
trail is currently in an undeveloped state although the Club plans to upgrade the trail to a semideveloped
state. Development includes clearing the route with a mulcher, when funds become
available, as well as signage and occasional grooming in the future.
As the local Club is a member of the Alberta Snowmobile Association (ASA), there is a significant
emphasis on safety and responsibility in the sport. The development of trails, as shown in other
provinces, encourages responsibility as snowmobilers will know where they are allowed to
travel. Hence the vision of the Club is to create a network of trails which in the future may tie
into the trails of other Clubs in the area, such as the LaCrete Polar Cats. Currently two other
trails have been identified on the east side of the Peace River. These trails look to share a
portion of the footprint created by existing right of ways, therefore discussions with ATCO
Electric are on-going. Preliminary work has also started on other trails on the west side of the
Peace River which would link to the approved Leddy Lake Trail.
The Club welcomes volunteers to assist in trail development and in particular encourages those
with snowmobiles to join the Club. The cost of membership is currently $80 annually (cost
increases after January 1) which includes $60 for an ASA Trail Pass and $20 for membership in
the local club. The ASA Trail Pass, which is recognized on any ASA trail in the province, supports
liability coverage for trails along with development and maintenance costs. Membership can
be purchased at Maximum Powersports, Thomas Homes & RV Centre and Ace Machining &
Welding. Those wishing to volunteer or to have a tour of the trail can contact Tim Lagace –
President at 780-618-7864 or Dwayne Buchholtz – Trail Identification Committee Chair at 780-
618-1504.
