my son to get rid of his quad for a bike which is fine buy me as I grew up riding bikes anyway are the pw 50 a good starter he is 6 and seems to be able to pick it up for the most part.it is a 99 and wants about 700.00 bucks bike is in good shape are they alright bikes

good learner bike ,my boy was 4 when i bought him a kdx 50 same as jr 50,looked at the pw but didn't like the fact that they are hand brakes.the kdx and jr are foot brake with a hand brake for the front tire.You may want to drop a tooth or two on the front sprocket to give it a little more bottom end as the are basically geared for flat ground .my boy is 6 now and is on a ktm 50 sr and just loves it....

Biggest thing is make sure he has all the gear,one good crash and he may be scared to ride again....

you can buy a 09 for $999 brand new, just have to look around. i got a 2010 for 1050.

A PW50 is going to be fairly small for a 6 year old boy. I would look for something a little bigger, like a TT50, or CRF50.

I thought of that but seen he is a bit short if seems to fit him well....for a while antway but this way he can get use to the trottle and diffrent feel over the quad. i was able to find a diffrent one for 500 bucks. so will be going with it is a 1999,or may trade my quad for a crf450x and a pw 50 for my son not sure yet. if he out grows it this summer will look at a crf70 for next year.

i remeber when i first starting riding dirtbikes, i had a pw 50 that was used for a CN track bike that dad found at a dump, it didint have a front end so dad put some bicycle forks on it and away i went, the first time i rode it i went full out into the side of our shop, forze up and forgot about the breaks. he had to take the govener out and restrictor plate in the exaust to make it a fun bike. other wise it was GUTLESS get him the jr50 a much better learner bike for a 6 yr old imo

still looking my son still isnt 100% sure he wants a bike yet he like to play in the mud and figured out that wont be as fun on two wheels he needs to make up his mind before i drop the cash thats why a PW 50 is looking good for 500 it is noit a big drop where as the honda crf 50 its around 1000 used or 1800 new.

I bought a brand new PW50 for 750.00 tax in when Yamaha had them on sale last year. It only has a few hours on it but my 5 year old loves it. I'll likely get close to the purchase price when I sell it in another year as well. Great little bikes to learn on before they step up to a clutched bike or one with gears.

I agree. My little guy started out on a PW50 with training wheels on it when he turned 3. By age 6 his was definately getting to big for it. Had to get him a KX 65. Great bikes though.

go with the 250r. the main difference between it and the X is basically gearing. and ya the wieght cause ya gots all the lights and crap.

I have a 2006 CFR 70 for sale that my son has outgrew. Its an awesome starter bike.
As the above poster stated go for the CRF 250R, the weight isn't the only difference they are entirely different bikes with the CFR 250R having way more power and a much better suspension.

the F dont have more power it is the gearing that makes it feel that way I have had both in the past and like both but the X was nice with the electric start and lights just in case. I will be following my son mostly and family rides so the wide ratio tranny in the X makes it more appelling just the weight savings when in the dunes or hill climbing when i get the chace would be nice deoends on the price diffrence as well
