Question "would i sled with someone that doesn't have an avy bag" all the time, so long as the terrian is acceptable, and the rider has a brain, and common sense and is not hungover or cocky.

i agree, beacon, probe, are a must, avi training highly recommended, avi bag also highly recommended, i have and still do ride with those that don't have some of the stuff. they usually do on the second ride, or some don't come back due to not liking the riding etcetc. but i don't get in someones face saying ya can't ride with us, everyone has there own level of acceptable risk, i try to manage it, and find it not in my best interest to find out who can operate the safety equipment and who can't. very strange that the ones who have avi equipment and training seem to be the ones getting caught lately. why is that.

i enjoy bringing new people out to our riding areas, make sure they have the equipment, and try to impart some of the do's and don'ts of the alpine, at least those i know as i seem to be learning all the time. i think those that think they know it all, may have there own problems.

Good post, well said!

The guy without a beacon impacts my safety directly. If the unthinkable happens I want somebody who has the tools to save my bacon. And I want to have said tools in order to save his/her bacon. I can say I'll be playing in safe areas and such, but shite happens.

yes i understand, but if the guy your riding with has no beacon, no safety training, you have no business being there in the first place. usually we ride with 3 to 15 people, with 3 you need to be aware of other peoples abilities, with 15 a good percentage are minimal training, with a percentage that have the knowledge, so it is more forgiving. but if 1 in the 15 doesn't have the equipment, i won't tell him to go home, i'll show and lend him a beacon. but he is only one person, not really a liability, and no i don't want to see him get hurt, but i know my limits, and call in search and rescue.

have you ever tried to run across a fresh avi runout. good friggin luck!

not sure what your confused about, if the only person your riding with has no beacon, probe or avi training, how can he effect your well being, you have no business being anywhere that they are required period. if you are riding with more people, u assess there abilities do you not? minimal experience, minimal avi risk, more experience you can adjust your riding areas, and adjust to the weakest member in the group do you not? if you are hitting the deep and steep you have accessed everyones abilities and the terrain is fitting for the weakest member, as in everyone has the equipment and ability to perform a rescue and have the ability to be there. right?
the weakest rider(for a better term) sets the riding area and safety hazards that are acceptable for the group or why did you invite them along. right. if someone in the group has an uneasy feeling about an area a route or a climb, do you goad/ belittle the person into taking a risk he is not comfortable with?

to the original question yes i will ride with people without the avi bags, i will also ride with those that have no training, gear or helmets. better to make them aware of the dangers and consequences. they are another rider, and someone who can help dig or go for help, if they get buried you are not doing your job, and have allowed someone to be put in danger well above there abilities.

i hope i have cleared up your confusion

I am both hungover and always cocky. SO I guess we won't be riding together.

My loss I suppose.

it may increase some risk, very little for the group, lots for the guy without the gear, but i'm thinking the risk is more in the lack of experience and doing definite nono's, like highmarking above a stuck rider, riding way beyond safe areas etc. but then the group has made a grave error by taking that person there.

i'm actually considering the basic needs are beacon probe shovel and 1st aid training, the rest are useless if ya can't revive the avi victim.

What would you want for your kids? If your kids were to venture out into the back country, what would you want them to wear, and how would you want them to prepare?

then apply that to yourself.

yes thats true willie, but you can adjust your riding to the level of risk, and with the gear and experience, your risks can be managed. i'm thinking rowdy was mainly refering to steep avi prone areas, when she was referring to no equipment no riding, and that i can agree with, althought there are a crap load of guys who don't use the gear in the mountains, personnally i just don't feel safe without it though.

ya was down in fernie a fter those guys got killed, a few were hitting a south east slope about 1:30 in the afternoon, full sun snow was real wet, we got the hell outta there, never even stopped just left, never heard about it sliding, but the hair on the back of the kneck was standing straight up. not a good feeling. i have made it a point to be off south facing slopes by 2 pm no later.
