So its that time again... my front deck is peeling again last covered in a solid color stain. This is getting old. Has anybody used anything different? Like rubberized spray or roll on coatings? I know the right way to do it (Strip it) but there is a lot of deck in front of my place. (1000 sq ft) The cost of synthetic decking is more than I want to spend to rebuild. Any ideas?

Am also facing redoing our deck ... Was thinking of the roll on heavy coating from Home Depot.... Think it even has a 10 year warranty or something like that...it isnt much more than regular stain. Like sirkdev said... Any thoughts or other ideas?

Behr Deckover, Olympic Rescue-It, Rust-Oleum Deck Restore

Well that does not look promising.. came across a system called magic deck that looked promising, it installed similar to a vinyl siding type install but advertising looks dated and cannot find a distributor. Sikkens products are first rate thats for sure I use them on the house (solid logs) may have to dig into for the deck as well.

I was looking at the deck over from behr sold at home depot as well. Do a google search there is tons of bad reviews and even a class action suit in the states.

I tried sharkskin on my trailer deck last summer, its already peeling I wouldnt go that route.

Yes sharkskin is peeling a bit in my enclosed sled trailer.

Linseed Oil for deck. Cheap and easy to apply and you can always get more anywhere

I heard good things about Sharkskin from Cloverdale.

The best proven stuff I found and used is Cetol DEK stains. It can be re-applied overtop with minimal preparation. It's pricey but worth it.

Sikkens Cetol 1, Cetol 23 Plus, SRD, Log & Siding, DEK Finish, log home stains, Sikkens Wood Finish

One thing about wood decks, if you treat them, then you are a slave to it forever. I just left mine natural, and sure it shows some greying and cracks, but after 15 years I haven't touched it.

Most decks are made from treated wood and look green. The green is the wood preservative.

Last year I went to Rona. They guy suggested to just add wood preservative to the deck. It comes in green or clear.

That is what i did used clear.

It's as thin as water. Soaks right in. This way no pealing, no crappy look. Just natural wood with a wood preservative.

I am in the same boat, deck needs to be tore down and replaced. Composites are pricey for a product that is going to fade on a south facing deck. Last summer I built the kids a climbing apparatus and covered it with the behr deck over. A bit of a test before I do the deck with it. The deck over held up real good through the winter and only peeled on the bottom where I nailed it with the whipper sniper. I will see how it lasts this summer yet before I do the deck with it. It was new lumber that I covered with the deck over so maybe that had something to do with why it has held up??

It is a quandary alright. I have coated and built many decks. I have used many different products. The south facing decks take a real beating from Mother Nature. The wood or composite expands and contracts and the question you need to ask is whether or not the coating on top expands and contracts the same as the base material. The other consideration is that the wood shrinks (not only expands and contracts) over time. arff has a good point with a clear oil treatment that soaks into the wood. If it sits on top, it will dry and peel and to redo it means sanding. Linseed oil is great but it will darken over the years but that isn't a real problem.

Our south facing deck built with cedar has Sikkens Cetol on it but it is not without yearly maintenance; nicks from the snow shovel and other problems. One has to be on top of it. A little sanding and touch ups but it you don't then it becomes a major sanding and a complete redo.

IMHO, yes composite is expensive, and yes, it fades but it is the best bang for your hard earned dollars. It will fade evenly and not deter the appearance. It needs to be put on properly and screwed from underneath for the best results. Every hole in any decking allows water penetration and that is definitely a problem. I re-did a composite deck last summer that was 10 years old and the deck boards were still in great shape. I was impressed by the material but not by the installation. The boards had been installed without the proper gaps and were not attached properly. Other than that it was a great surface even after that many years and it hadn't even been washed.

Treated pine is good as it won't rot but it will shrink and crack causing rough spots and the possibility of getting slivers in your feet. If you like the natural gray look, then this is for you. I don't know how the color would be affected after 10-12 or 15 years with a clear oil coating. I do know that any solid color stain is going to peel and be a lot of work to maintain.

I also need to replace my deck and have been wondering the same things. I do know that treated pine does shrink considerably and am contemplating whether or not it would be wise to buy the deck boards now,lay them out to dry and shrink before installation. Would they be ready by the fall? Or does it take a full year to quit shrinking? My deck is 75 ft long by 16 feet wide and has 4 levels. Any suggestions as to where to get the best deal on lumber in the Edmonton area? Thanks.

Have you ever thought of using 1'x1' concrete pavers. I have seen a couple of decks and they looks good.

I'm faced with the deck staining at the house. I let it wear down for a few years and accept I have to find a stain and cross my fingers.

For the lake we installed composite 3 years ago. Expensive....YES
Worth It.......YES YES YES
Worth every penny. It fades at a common rate and you don't notice it even compared to the parts that are covered. High pressure spray or twice a year and that's it.

Tapatalk....well I'm happy with you now....thanks for the fix.

Trying Thompson"s Water seal on my deck. It is pressure treated and product goes on quite nice. It is also available in a few different tints.

I spent the money and got composite. Awesome feel barefoot. And best of all I never have to paint or stain anything. Easy to install for a hardwood guy to!

Rona has really great pricing on composite decking this week. I am installing it at my new house right now. It is one of the nicer looking composites available but only comes in one color and is no where near as versatile as some of the other brands.
I'm installing this with Regal aluminum railing and running led strip lights inside the handrail with clear picket spacers to let the light shine through. Cant wait to see it all come together.

Talk to Blair at Hayduk Lumber. He's a sledder.

They are in Calmar, but go into town on a daily basis. They could bring your order in when they are getting supplies from distributors.

I found they are still the best in pricing, and they are a true lumber yard.
