So I am finally going to be looking for a new to me side x side over the winter. Been begging, borrowing and stealing friends quads for the odd ride over the last couple of years but now that my boys are getting old enought to ride it is time to start looking and get back into quadding again. This will be my first side x side and it's going to get turned into a family wagon pretty quick with a cage extension and rear seat set up.

Question is what should I be looking out for when I am looking at used Rzr's and Rhino's. I have narrowed my search down to these. There are lots out there I am not sure what types of things I should be watching out for aside from the obvious.... Not even sure what a guy would consider high than normal mileage.

any suggestions or help would be great

Very little people, will be riding with a 4 year old and a 2 year old. Not so much this year for the 2 year old but whatever I buy is going to have to last me a while

I know this wasn't on your list but, having owned a Rhino and a Ranger and ridden just about everything out there I would suggest a Ranger Crew. Much safer than modifying a two seater into a four seater. I would even look at the Terx over the Rhino, seems to be a strudier machine.

Was considering the 4 seat rzr but not sure it will fit my riding style when the kidlets are not part of the cargo... anyone know how they work in the mud? and what they are like in the tight trails.

Also what should I be looking at on the used units, what would you consider high mileage, what type of mods are dead giveaways for an abused machine. I don't need anyone else's headaches, made that mistake with some old sleds I bought.

High mileage on an OHV is different than for a vehicle, 2500km with the wrong owner can wreck a quad, 10000km with the right one and it'll still be good. It's the maintenance regime and the riding style that makes the difference. One giveaway nobody thinks of is to check inside the airbox for signs of water and mud, check the bottom of the a arms etc for gouges, scratches are normal. Check the assembly bolts for signs of movement and tightness etc, then do the normal fluids checks and compression if you want to.

If you are weighing the pros and cons of buying a used RZR vs. a used Rhino there is only one question to ask: Which UTV do you think is going to have the best long term durability, a machine that was built entirely in house by one company to their specific specs (Yamaha), or a machine that was built piecemeal by farming out each seperate component to the lowest bidder (Polaris)?

LOL dont get me wrong I like the rhino but they have no power end of story.
when they come out with another cylinder then they might have something other than a fast golf cart.

I agree, I had a 2008 Rhino and now have a 2010 Ranger. The Ranger is better than the Rhino in every aspect and it's nice to have the added power as well as a bench seat. I wouldn't recommend the Rhino until Yamaha does some serious upgrading, it's just not in the same league as many of the newer UTV's. The Teryx is a nice piece of equipment, had I not wanted a bench seat that is the UTV I would upgraded to when I sold my Rhino.

I don't know I'm very happy with the Rhino. I don't go mach 2 on the trails so speed isn't an issue. She gets in and out of every mud hole I drive her into. I personally don't like the low profile of the razor. I like to keep my azz dry if possible. jm:twocents:

Sellers response

I stopped by Riverside and they know me and my Rhino condition. I told them what I was asking for it and they said I should be asking closer to $13500.00 so for now I'm sticking to my asking price but I've made note of your offer. I've owned many ATV's and motorcycles, they always sell to the first serious buyer who comes for a look because I keep my stuff in excellent shape. Go have a look and see what you get for $11000.00 then come see mine. I will come down a bit but not to $11,000.00.

Well I'm not a power junkie and so far my Rhino has pulled me out of every mudhole and up every hill I've thrown at it. I'm ok with being the slow guy in the group...it usually means I get the last laugh when I'm towing somebody's "fast" machine back to camp. I did consider the Teryx but didn't think the extra 10 hp was worth the added 5 inches of width/height and 400 lbs...plus I think they are just plain ugly lol! Maybe if those dumb-ass Americans would stop sueing Yamaha they would be more inclined to give the Rhino a more powerful engine...

It'll most likely be the rhino or rzr for me, haven't driven either one yet so that'll be the first order of business. Thanks for all the feedback. Anyone driving the new rzr 4 that can comment on it?
