Hey Peeps

I'm the market for a second hand skid steer, less than 1000 hours and must have a lift of 2000lbs (not tipping lift but acutal lift).

I'm leaning towards a Case 430 because of the Cummins motor and it is non-turboed.

Let me know your thought?

Your looking for the right thing. Case are great, they are more expensive then others but worth it. My dads on his second, had a 1845C for over 10 years, never a single issue, the only thing that ever got broken was from a piece of concrete hitting it. Got a 70XT now, the only problems have been replacing 1 drive motor, and the actually just broke again the lock for 1 side is messing up again, and the hydralic hoses, got to be careful because one got loose and ended up bursting. But as far as motor goes they are bulletproof. And the 70XT is less hp then the 430 I believe and it's lifting is rated at 2200lbs but it will lift easily 3000lbs before it tips don't ask me how I know :d

The machines have seen a lot of abuse to, hammering out concrete, etc, etc. The 70XT has around 5000hours on it, and the motor runs as good as new still.

Only problem i've heard with the new ones is the electric bucket disconnect, it doesn't always like to work.

I have a Case 85XT and a bobcat 320. The bobcat tracked unit is 10 times the machine, IMO. The 85 will lift a house but is overpowered making it really twitchy. If you have to make anything level you need tracks,or work on rough concrete or ashpalt the track unit shines again in not wearing out.

What model is the XT, did they change them to the 400 seris? I'm finding the Xt models used but they are not on Case's website. I would like to go with wheels but I will get the tracks that slip on over the wheels. I will be using it for Ag work primarly but also some landscaping at home.

Thanks!!

Yea they changed it from 70XT 90XT, etc to 430 etc. But the HP ratings do not jive as they were all uped. Not sure about looking them up on cases site.

A track machine is sometimes superior, all depends what the machine is doing. But tracks do cost a lot more to replace then tires.

Got an 248B Caterpillar,82 HP turbo with 2200 lb lift..... But sometimes think one would like tracks.... It does depend on the application you are using it more, My use is more on firm & dry ground...So tires work for me.

i have both a cat and a bobcat. personally i like the cat WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY more, but both are very good machines. the best advice i got and adhere to is, go with the one that the dealer is closest and that you like, cause they ALL break down, and nobody likes to drive for 2 hrs for parts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ive been running skid steers for a living for 24 years now and have had them all except Gehl,I personally only buy Bobcats now,my reasons are I prefer the foot controls over hand controls, way better for finess work but lots of people cant use there feet and hands in conjunction with each other so they are tuffer to get used to,the Cases are powerfull but very jumpy and not very good visability out the sides or back when reversing,Cats are nice but same issue trying to see behind you is just not as good as Bobcat,John Deer was a nice machine to run and visabilaty was ok but there cab and door system sucked. To me there all capable machines but Bobcat is the only way to go for price, service(great dealer here),cab comfort and the biggest for me is visability, when workin in tight areas and around pipes I like to see both rear tires from my seat easily no matter what position the lift arms are in.Right now Im runnin S185s and a S300.Just my thoughts though.

I have run them all, Cat is my fav by far. Ours has 2 pumps so when you are lifting something you dont have to be rpm max to get full lift power, very nice if you are doing tight spaced work. once you get used to a Cat you will never go back IMO.
As for tracks they are very Maintanace and parts $$$$$$ if you are spending 10 hours /day 5 days a week in one, tracks are for U. U cant compact as well with tracks and they are not that great one ice and snow, less ground pressure.

Shouldn't break down to often. I can count on 1 hand how many times between the 2 cases have been down in over 10 years.....And the machines are used and abused a lot worse then most.

My gripe with foot controls is ya it's nice if your drilling piles, landscaping, etc. But if your working in very rough and bumpy places, your feet are going to do things you don't want them to and hit the controls. I like operating the hydralics with feet of the case, but that's it. I see no reason for anything else to be foot control. The controls are smooth once you are use to that machine.

And as for buying, I would buy from auction, there is some really good deals to be had. Upgrading the 70XT this year are going up to something almost new, the deals are crazy.

Foot controls for me as well...there are very few operators that can match the precision of foot controls with hand controls bottom line, the rest comes down to preference and experience. For guys with little experience and seat time hand contols are easier to pick up and learn, but for precision work nothing beats foot pedals. The Cats come close, and I love the gas pedal option on the Cat, it does use far less fuel than my Bobcats but the hydraulic cut out is a pain in the butt. I have both wheeled and tracked units and while I love the tracks there is a place for both. I will only buy Bobcat, but really am leaning towards giving a Cat a try for a specific contract we were just awarded. I agree with the above comment that the dealership is VERY important. They dont break down often, but when they do most times you need a dealer especially for parts. We log about 1000 hrs per unit a year...

If you want to get really screwed up run a Cat,Bobcat, JD, Case then jump in a older Gehl and see if you can back it off the trailer.... That old twin stick was a nightmare.

I agree with Scrambled. we have had several of each and i find the bobcat to be a far better machine. I find bobcat service to be above and beyond Finning the last few years,We have had to sit heavy machines while finning had to order pumps for australia. Once had a 500 hr Cat trackhoe sit for three weeks due to union issues at part distribution in edmonton. These are the problems encountered when ordering parts that cost more than a skidsteer and i havent found much better with their light equipment

Have a185 New Holland and i love it . Not as nimble as some but smooth with power to lift and push anything.Longer wheelbase is nice...
Depends what your using it for. I really like the scissor boom on the NH for lifting and loading it`s tough to beat...

I would not buy anything but Bobcat, I had a 763 and never had a problem and just moved up to a T300 track machine in 07 and would never look back. This thing is like a beast. If you are going a ways down the road it is slower then tire machines but 10 times the machine in every other ways.

My hubby's got a Case 440 on tracks. He loves it! We have used it for just about everything around the house... lol

It's all personal choice. It's like a truck, test drive them all before you buy!

I like bobcat and cat. cat is my favorite though because of the true hand controls not the stupid levers bobcat has(case now has joysticks too). and with the foot throttle it was amazing how much fuel I saved in a year.

even though I think deere has the best set up for lifting and balanced wonderfully.

It all comes down to preferance. and for tracks or no tracks, well really depends on application and once again what you want. but if you plan on using it in the winter much with really any kind of hills in sight you might want no tracks with good chains. well thats at least what I found out. thats one reason I don't have a single track machine anymore.
